energy drinks

Sorry, but lucozade and energy drinks are about the worst thing you can take as a type 2 on oral meds. Massive rise in BG from lucozade - some people use it instead of glucose for an oral glucose tolerance test.
Look at the rest of your diet if you are low on energy. A healthy reduced carb diet shouldn't result in low energy. What do you eat?

Sorry for stating the obvious, but have you tried coffee instead - a perfectly legal addiction that shouldn't interfere with diabetes?

A couple of months ago I drank 380ml of Lucozade as a home OGTT and the result after an hour was over my meters reading capacity and I spent most of the afternoon nodding off which is the opposite of what Lucozade is supposed to do,so IMO,Don't touch it or any other energy drink(Unless you're on Insulin of course and use it to treat a Hypo)

thanks

Springer, have you had your low-energy levels investigated by your gp?

Hi. No diabetic should ever go near Lucozade or anything 'sugary' to that degree unless having a hypo. Do ensure you are having enough fat and protein which does contribute to your bodies energy needs without increasing blood sugar.

Is that true about lucozade? I recently went to A&E as I was feeling unwell, no appetite and started being sick every 1/2 an hour (this happened before when I had DKA). Before I was discharged the dr said that if I couldn't eat then to drink lucozade instead. 1 thing that alarmed me when I was there the dr asked me what I like my sugars to be so I said that I try to keep them under 8, then he said while I'll to keep then between 15-20, why would that be. I didn't ask then cos I was really to ill to even speak.

Why would that be? Probably because the mans a complete moron.

Well, lucozade will certainly help you keep your BG between 15 and 20! Can't believe the doctor said that - was it supposed to be temporary advice because you were poorly?

Yes it was just for while I was unwell, but regardless to his advice I was injecting more to get my bg's down. But I did drink the lucozade tho.

My sick day 'rules' for ketones say that if BG is below 8.3mmol/l . To check ketones every 2 hours and if present to take insulin (specified amounts depending on the ketone level) and to drink a glass of a sugary drink or fruit juice
You use relatively large amounts of insulin to get rid of ketones and the danger of taking insulin and no glucose at this level is a hypo. Your body also needs some fuel to function properly in fighting any infection.
(flat coke is suggesting if you are vomiting . They also say to call doctor if you have ketones and vomiting persists ... even if glucose levels aren't high)

Above 8.3mmol/l my 'rules' say to drink water, plus of course the necessary insulin (other diabetics on the course suggested Evian water for the bicarb, the doctors seemed to agree with that)

You need to get a set of rules, especially for you, for if you are sick and have ketones again. Have them written out so you can refer to them (easier than trying to remember when you feel ill) You need a lot more insulin when you have ketones than normally but you really need individual guidance as to how much and when.

This is the type of honest no nonsense advice I love reading! I can only agree with what's been said & no further explanation is needed!
