hi guys

i am supposed to take 3 metformin tablets a day but that would mean me eating an extra meal so i only take two a day. one after breakfast and one after my evening meal. do you think this will be ok to control my diabetes ?
 
Metformin doesn't do much to control diabetes, what does control T2 is the correct diet. If you keep your carb intake low (i.e. avoid spuds, cereals, pasta, anything made with flour or with a sugar content), you may not need any Metformin. Are you testing your blood sugars? If you are, and it's a very sensible thing to do in the early days, you will soon see what does or does not control your sugar levels.

@drewster45 - Hi :) I take 4 Metformin a day (and Insulin too), 2 Metformin on a morning and 2 with Evening Meal. It can take a couple of months for Metformin to build up in your system and have the desired effect. Metformin lowers the amount of sugar created by the Liver and decreases the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines. Just never take it on an empty stomach. I would consider taking 2 with your evening meal.

No, but that is just a personal opinion and you should not act upon it. I should explain. My personal experience with Metformin is that it was ineffective and finally affected the taste of food adversely. I am not a fan. You do what your doctor says until something breaks ...........or you get better.
 
Hi. If you are on the standard Metformin it is best taken with food but you can be flexible with that risking some bowel upset and I'm sure the leaflet says you can take two 500mg tablets at a time, but you must check with the GP or pharmacist and not take my word for it as I don't know your circumstances. If you are on the Slow Release (SR) version you don't have to take them with meals. I was on 2000mg of the SR version and took 1000mg twice a day, but again check with the leaflet or pharmacy first. As others have said, Metformin doesn't affect blood sugar by much but a low-carb diet will have more effect. Metformin can help more if you have excess weight, but the right diet is still essential.
