I am close to 80 years of age and have been Type 2 diabetic for over five years. For some time now I find that I have to go to the toilet at least three times during the night and they are not just small amounts that I pass. Could anyone tell me what is happening?

i get up around 4 times during the night for the loo

Hi,

If your blood sugars are high then this could be the cause.

If this is not the case then I would see your G.P.

I get up three times a night, thats been the last 10 years ,before I was diabetic, can be a age thing as well,

what are your BG numbers like? It can be just age related, for some reason the kidneys work better at night than during the day.

edit...whatPatricia said :)

:(
If I drink Tea after 10 at night I am up all night, I do have 1 teaspoon of sugar though
I tend to drink iced water and find I am better with that, I still go to the loo but not as often.
My other problem is I think I want to wee a pint and its an eggcup full.

pelvic floor exercises should help that a lot

It can be relevant to high blood sugar levels .
Test your levels if alert and with it (middle of night)

Make a note of what your levels are .
This way you can see if there is a pattern ?

I did this and have a marker/guide of if my BG levels
are above 10.3 - then yep - need the loo !
Thankfully with doing my nightly insulin units , this rarely
happens nowadays .
Only if ill it will spike and then I know I am brewing for
trouble .

If no pattern emerges or no raised blood sugars happening .
Make an appointment to discuss further with your GP .
For your own peace of mind if in any way concerned .

It sounds very much like irritable bladder,It can be helped,by tablets, but also by retraining,I went for retraining, make a note of how many times you pass water in the day,and try to reduce it,it dosent harm to hold it as long as you can, after about two weeks the nights improve.I dont drink after 8pm but drink plenty during the day.
But after all my advice still have a word with your nurse,we are not all the same.Google stress incontinance,I dont know how to add a link to this site.

I had a person live with us that was disabled and couldn't get out of bed to wee during night.

He voluntarily stopped drinking liquids after 6pm to try and stop needing the loo. It only helped mildly. I arranged with the gp to have a kidney scan. A nurse came to our place to do it and whisked him straight in to hospital to have a catheter fitted. As this was not part of my care plan or package the person went to a different place to stay after.

I know not relevant to small wee-ing at night, but it is important to talk to your gp for this, as there are many causes to problems.

Hi. Assuming it's not due to high blood sugar, then bear in mind that as you get older the kidneys work more at night. You need to reduce the amount you drink near bedtime. If you are male, have you had your prostate checked via PSA and/or physical exam?
