Exercise for Diabetics

This advice needs to be revised.

Precautions to take if you take insulin or oral diabetes medication:

* If your blood sugar level is less than 100 mg/dl (5.5) prior to exercise, take a carbohydrate snack prior to beginning the exercise. A good rule of thumb is to add 15 grams of carbohydrates (1 Carbohydrate Exchange) to your usual diet for each 30 minutes of moderate exercise, or for each 15 minutes of intense exercise.
* If your blood sugar level is higher than 100 mg/dl before exercise, it is probably not necessary to take the carbohydrate snack before a light exercise session, but you may need extra carbohydrates 1/2 hour to 2 hours following the exercise. Add 1530 grams of carbohydrate (12 Carbohydrate Exchanges) to the next meal or snack if your blood sugar dips below 70 mg/dl (4) within an hour or more following exercise.

I never take any extra carbs before I exercise. I usually walk, up to about 2 hours and carry glocosetabs in case I need them. that's only happened about twice. Once was after walking 3 hours on steep alpine paths with tall steps and once when I walked about 4 hours on a cross country up and down. I avoid the gym as it bores me rigid, but I have done the odd hour there and never need a "top-up" I'm on minimal Metformin now, but I did use gliclazide for about 3 years. I would think that carrying "emergency rations" would be safe for most people unless taking a big dose of rapid insulin.
Bernstein gives a lot of information on exercise, too much to summarise here, but he prefers Glucose tabs to extra foods. He also recommends moderate, rather than gentle exercise.

The whole question of carbs for energy & sporting performance needs to be addressed. Ally often chips in, & I am not sure of the validity of her advice for other than professionals.

Also that information from an American source may not be valid for this site's low carb philosophy. Even if we correct the typo of a 1530 g carb meal after sport & reduce it to 150 g, they are recommending 500 g (1 lb) of potatoes or 9 Mars bars!

I find a single dried apricot (5 g carb) is sufficient to take my BS from below 5 to above 6 during a 40 minute tennis set. And I don't run out of energy.

Again someone speaking for the whole site! I thought it was a forum of ideas not fixed opinion! Please leave people to make an informed descision rather than forcing fixed views.

I'm beggining to think I'm on the wrong forum and thats its only about pushing fixed opinion of low carbs.

Hi All,

There are some glaring holes in the information on this site, and we are working to fix these. It is my intention to open the site up to allow peer review of each article/news article/feature/interview - moderated by experts from the community, and allowing visitors/us to prioritise those comments that are most accurate. This, I think, would give us the best diabetes information possible. We will address this, and I apologise for the bad advice on the website currently, thanks for pointing it out and it is earmarked for change.

Regards,

Dan

Yet again someone stating this forum has a low carb Philosophy. We do not just advocate low carb!!This forum is here for all diabetes on all sorts of diets!!The fact that we have some very passionate followers of low carbing does not mean that this forum is just for low carbers and it never will be!!It is a community for all Diabetes.

You'd rather people "pushed" diets that don't work???

In the last week or so on the ADA forum we had someone who had dropped their A1c by TEN points and yet another person who lost 100lbs. Neither did this by following the ADA's own dietary advice, which like the DUK's advice is routinely "pushed" on all diabetics.

Trink ,the key word here is 'Philosophy' as my disclaimer states in my post above this forum is for all diabetics. This forum does not have and never has had a low carb philosophy ,it is a fact that we have a few low carbers as members who are very enthusiastic on low carbing but that does not make it our philosophy!!!

I think the point has been made. No individual viewpoint is wrong. I will close this thread before it descends into the usual.

Regards, Tubs.

As the express purpose of this thread was to advise Admin about discrepancies on the home pages I concur with closing this thread.
