exercise and food

Wow, that’s pretty much amazing … my mother is a few years older than you, and I keep telling her to exercise, but she will never listen! Not to mention vigorous sports, a walk or a 15-min bike ride would be enough to keep her healthy and going. Does exercise affect you negatively at all? My mother thinks she shouldn’t exercise because of her diabetes, but obviously that’s wrong! I will tell her of the amount you exercise as soon as I can!

Exercise is encouraged for all of us & particularly the elderly & diabetic to maintain circulation & breathing. I'm 69 & my wife 70. She swims for an hour every day & we both attend the hospital gym for heart rehab exercises. (Ann had a heart attack 3 years ago. I'm allowed in as I drive her there.)

A minimum is a daily half hour walk. Moderate exercise can only be beneficial to diabetics. I check my BS between sets.
 
I think its harder to start exercise when you haven't done any for a long time but its not impossible. My 80 year old father was put on an exercise bike by the physios 1 week after a knee replacement operation . My mother has osteoporsis and very painful arthritis, we have got her doing some exercises in her chair.
As to not exercising with diabetes, exercise is one of the main planks of therapy. It doesn't have to be intensive.
Age doesn't have to be a barrier I'm 56, I still run,go hill walking, ski and do regular Pilates, even hula hooping on a Wi fi. :) It does wonders for my BS levels. I hope and pray that my knees will hold up and I'll be able to continue for a long time yet
 
I'm 61 and do at least 2 2mile plus walks in groups each week.often more and I do 2 x 45 minute sessions of aqua exercise in the pool with a group of "oldies" of whom I'm one of the younger ones.
The walks I do are mainly cross country, so involve hills. Today, my "bum" muscles are telling me about yesterday's walk up Lardon Chase. It rises 75m in about 350 m distance( it's steep! :evil: . For the first time, on Tuesday, I did it all the way up without stopping. Still shamed by the 80 year old who just zooms up. He's skinny though. I have to drag a surplus 2 stone up there. The view is lovely when you do get there. then you have to get back down. the walk leads across Goring and Streatley golf course, which someone told me is the worst one in Britain for heart attacks.
From next month, I shall be doing a lot of walks pushing a pram. My daughter is going back to work and I'm having grand daughter 1 day a week.
