exercise and protein supplements

..im a TYPE 1 daibetix.....ive got back in to my weight training so i can put weight on....one thing that puzzles me with all the sites about now for diabetes, some say traing and proetin supplements are ok and others say nt to use them....which is actually true....can someone help me out with this question pls

Have had the same sort of advice. Body-building gurus say to eat a lot of protein, especially right after training, but I've read diet advice that says plenty of protein is provided with normal meals.
So I don't know the answer either, but what I've done was that when I started trying to build muscles I drank a half litre of milk, reinforced with whey powder. I certainly gained bigger muscles, but kept my full body weight also. After a few months I stopped the extra protein eating. Started the 5:2 diet, lost 22 lbs, improved my Habc1 very much, but still body-build and am gaining muscle as quickly as ever. For me I try to eat minimal carbohydrates and enough protein in the form of fish and eggs.

Have you ever had advice from a diabetes specialist dietitian with a special interest in sports and exercise? He /she should be able to advise you on the safety of taking protein supplements and what impact taking these may have on your blood glucose levels - some protein coverts to glucose so you may find your blood sugar levels increase if you take protein supplements. Contact your local diabetes care team to find out if there is someone you can be referred to locally. The Runweet website is a useful source of information (www.runsweet.com). There is also a specialised diabetes and sports clinic that you can be refered to at the Royal Berkshire Hospital led by Dr Ian Gallen which includes access to a diabetes specialist dietitian.

Hi there,
If you have Type 1 diabetes, taking on board a recovery drink afterwards can certainly be very useful - really it's an opportunity to get energy back into your body along with proteins, fluids, etc to help your body recover/rebuild as quickly as possible.
If you have Type 2 diabetes, then they are not such a good idea, particularly if you are using the exercise to lose weight. Better to just eat a well balanced meal after your bloods have normalised.
For you as Type 1, best results are achieved by taking your recovery drink within the first 15-20mins after exercise. Depending on how hard you have worked and what your BG level after you have finished exercising, you may have to adjust your basal injection (or infusion) to match the carb loading.

hey I use this protein half hour before I start training and it keeps my bloods level I start on the running machine for half hour or so then I lift some weights for about an hour or so and it keeps me in shape... Type one diabetic for just over 15 months....

Hi, I asked the same question to my dietitian and he told me it all depends on the diet. If you have a low carbs and a high protein diet than you better shouldn't because to much protein isn't healthy either, so you'll have to cut of a part of your daily protein meal, and if it's a low protein diet than I advise you not to or else you'll have to cut of protein from all your meals and for me that's not worth it

Really a recovery/protein/energy supplement after you exercise is designed not only to give a protein element etc, but more importantly after you exercise you have a 30 min or so 'window' after you finish, where your muscles are able to draw energy out of the bloodstream without the need for insulin (exercise certainly activates GLUT 4 transporters which enable this to happen). If you have a balanced diet however, and you're not really exercising for an extended period of time, then it's really not necessary to use any supplement at all, just keep well hydrated, and your body will do the rest for you!

Well done for your exercise regime with being a relative newbie to T1D! I don't have diabetes myself, but my husband is T1D and exercises regularly.
What are your blood readings during your run? I am guessing your protein shake doesn't have much in the way of carb in it or else you you would begin to run a little high. Do you take any other form of carb during your workout or do you just rely on the shake?
Sorry for the questions - your carb management is quite different to the norm, so I am just interested in hearing about your experiences.

Great you have done Dafne. Have you thought of signing yourself up for the Animas Sports Weekend? I think they still run them, though places are limited. Think you might find it really interesting. My husband did it and thought it was brilliant.
