Exercise is BAD for you!

Hi All

I was recently (November 2010) diagnosed with T2 diabetes.

My Diabetic Nurse advised that I needed to think about getting fit and doing some exercise.

So I bought a pushbike in March 2011 and I cycle 6 miles or so every night. About a month ago, some dozy *&^%$ parked on double-yellow lines, opened her car door just as I was cycling past and I slammed into the car door and ended up in the road.

So there is conclusive evidence, exercise is BAD for you...

I do hope you weren't hurt.

I too had a bad experience with exercise. I walked on my treadmill every day. But unfortunately I did it barefoot which I now know is wrong. I now have chronic tendonitis in my foot and painful toe joint. Treadmill now gathering dust. Don't anyone be put off by our bad experiences though :?

Childish people who start childish arguments. KNOW-ALLS who claim they can help people to control their Diabetes without knowing their medical back ground.

Did I mention I dislike KNOW-ALLS.

People desperate for attention and recognition.

People who get angry when they don't receive anything in return for helping others.
Exercising on a bike is very painful for me, I get piles every time I sit on one. :?

No need to be sorry when you are literally right in what you say.

Football. Bad manners.
I scraped together £30 for a month's gym subscription.

2 gos on the treadmill and light weights, half-hour session, every other day.

Mowed the lawn on the next Sunday.

Now can barely put any weight on my right hip, hurts like hell through back, hip and leg unless I walk bent forward, can't sit anywhere comfortably, can't lie down comfortably, can't sleep, pain killers not touching it.

Exercise IS bad for you!

Awaiting X-ray results from last Tuesday. Can't be that bad, 'cos they haven't rushed them through as an emergency. On the other hand - still hurts, and the grass just keeps on growing!

How about this for service - see GP at 10:00 (no appointment necessary). Given a chit for the X-ray department 30 miles away. Turn up at X-ray unit, same day, at 13:50. All done and leaving the car park at 14:20. Impressive or what?

Cycling isn't bad for you, inattentive car drivers are! In 45 years of life, the last 15 with type 1 diabetes, the only time I ever spent a night in hospital (2 nights, in fact) was when a driver opened his car door without looking, causing a 9cm gash in my upper left arm, tore cuff of T shirt, broke my watch glass and buckled my front wheel. And, yes, I was looking, but couldn't give the parked car any more space, due to cars hurtling round a corner past traffic lights, towards me. Needed stitches and, for a week or so, had to wear bandage to protect my arm from overhanging branches and wore cycling gloves for extra padding. Still cycling as enthusiastically as ever :D

IS brilliant sooooo funny been cracking up here!  loved the first one, excercise is indeedy BAD for you, I got talipes feet [ club feet ] n my daft DSN forgot this fact n ordered me to do class everyday! I actually only do half of the class or else I wouldnt be able to walk next day due to the talipes, arthritis, and diabetic neuropathy. Got totally bollocked n reduced to tears with her preaching and bullying at me. You lot keep me going and sane! you're fantastic. Anna.x :D

Come close to this a few times on my bike but thankfully have escaped unharmed, the first thing I do when about to open a car door is check my door mirrors and can't understand why others don't do likewise! :?

Ordered a exercise bike today from Amazon to go in my garage, as a fair weather cyclist it will come in handy for those dreadful winter days.

Anna - can't your DSN prescribed free / reduced price swimming, assuming there's a pool near enough to you, and your feet can cope? I'm pretty sure there's a swimming stroke suitable for everyone, perhaps involving floats.

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Just came across this thread linked below another one.

We recently had a week in Lanzarote.

I decided to use the sunny days to get back into a running routine.

First day out, going well, and tripped over a rock on an unmade bit of path.

Full length in the gravel, stubbing both big toes on the way down and managing to bounce my head off the floor so I had a cut beside my eyebrow.
The blood dripping down onto the path worried me for a bit, but it soon stopped.

Gravel rash all down my right arm, parts of my right leg, and various other body parts which had no logical way of hitting the ground but apparently did.

Still, it was at the start of the holiday and if you have to spend a week wearing nothing but shorts and open toed sandals and not really walking very much then a villa in Lanzarote takes some beating.
The (medicinal) Cerveza from the local Spar helped as well.

I have one big toenail which looks to be varnished a very dark red, and I can just (after a month) walk comfortably in walking boots.

So I have missed a month of running and exercise can certainly be bad for your health (if not for your tan).

Cheers

LGC

Oh, although I note that I wasn't taking as good care of my feet as I might, I am cheered that I seem to be still healing O.K.

Sorry for your acciden LGC but glad it didn't totally ruin your holidayI have to agree that exercise is bad for you.

I walk quite a bit . mostky to try to get my levels under conrol. A few months ago I bought a new pair of walking socks. The kind with an inner sock. My big toe felt a lile uncomforable and when I ot home there had been quite a bit of bleeeding underneath my oenail, because the insock had been twisted and out pressure ion it under my walking boots.
Since then it has cleared pretty much. This has happened before so didnt particularly bother me. Sometimes it has o just "grow out!. No pain - no prolems just a slightly discoloured nail,.
The only thing that bothered me was he hought of my upcoming annual review. As my control is now good they seem to cast around for somehing o make a fuss about. I did not want o be sent o the chiropodist for no reason except o make he docor look as if he had done something.
The obvious solution escaped me unil I read your post. probably because it has hardly been "sandal" weather here.
Yes! I just have to varnish my toenails! Thanks again.
I hope your wounds all heal quickly.

Some of you may have seen my recent postings about how high my BS were getting...

Unfortunately (Dammit), I decided to get my bike out and have cycled 10 miles a day for the last few days, and my BS's are back down to around 8 afterwards...

When I was diagnosed with type 2 last November my doctor advised doing about 3 hours exercise per week so I joined the local university gym, which is open to the general public at a reasonable price. All went well, then it was closed over Christmas and I decided to go for a run around the town. My back has frequently been agony since. It seems the hard pavements have jarred an old back injury. After about a month I returned to the gym and got advice on back exercises, which have been a help. I hope I have now learnt to be more careful about the kind of exercise I do and to take advice.

An interesting programme SophiaW, but it won't change anything for me because it doesn't deal with weight loss, I need to burn off the calories; and as yet we can't be sure how permanent or great the bg or cholesterol losses will be either. So I'll stick to my present routine for now; but it is something worth keeping an eye on.
