Hi all,

I’m new to this forum. I’m type 1 recently diagnosed with pancreatic insufficiency.

Please can you share any experiences you’ve had with Creon. I have calcification of the pancreas and just started taking Creon.

I weigh 45kg but I’m taking a lot of Creon 3x25000 with main meals and 2x25000 with snacks for a total of 375k per day. It sounds like a lot of Creon for my weight.

Please can you share your experiences e.g. your weight, dosage etc. I understand everyone is different but I’d appreciate any insight.

Thank you.

Hi. I have chronic pancreatitis and I’ve been taking creon a while now. I don’t think your weight really matters to be honest, it’s more about symptoms. Were you getting malabsorption symptoms before you took creon? And by that I suppose I mean the horrible toilet ones….
I weigh around 50kg and I take 4 with meals usually and 2 or 3 with snacks, depending on what it is. I usually go off fat content and I can tell the next day if I forget to take them or don’t take enough. I always think it’s better to take too much than too little.

Hi Nick. I started creon about three years ago and I had lost a lot of weight. I gained weight steadily and have levelled off at about 54.5 kg. I take 2 Creon 25000 with main meals and one capsule with snacks.

Thanks so much for replying. Yes I had malabsorption for a few months and rapidly lost 5 kg. It was mostly loose stool. I’ve gained back most of that weight although since the past month something changed and the Creon at the lower dose stopped working. I had to up Creon significantly (almost double) to hold on to the weight. I barely eat any fat about 5-6g with each meal. It Feels like a very high dose for what I eat.

Also would appreciate if anyone can share what their snacks look like - is it a biscuit, fruit etc in small quantities or something more substantial? I get the feeling my snacks are more like mini meals which is why I need to take a lot more Creon. I’m trying to gain weight so I need to eat a bit more.

I take 60000 Creon for my snack which is usually half a meal replacement nutrition shake and a couple of small pancakes - about 6g of fat and 250 calories.

60000 for a snack does sound like quite a lot although your snacks are much larger than mine. There's a maximum recommended daily dose for Creon so if it was me I'd be talking to my doctor/health professional.

My snacks (not all at once): a banana, 25g nuts, handful sultanas, pork crackling/rind, blueberries or strawberries if in season, 2 pieces of dark chocolate, a protein bar. Stuff like that. No where near 250 kcal (more likely less than 100 kcal) but I'm not trying to gain weight. I don't take creon with my snacks although my specialist said something like "maybe take one or two". Too vague for me so I just don't, although I would take maybe 25000 if it was a really big snack. For comparison I take 3 creon (75000 units) with dinner which is usually about 500-600 kcal. I really think you need to ask your doctor...
