Extremely high sugar for no apparent reason...?

Hey
Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on this, yesterday i felt quite funny, really hot all day, slightly dizzy, didnt really think anything of it, checked my sugars regularly and they were ok ish, if a little elevated (8-12). when i woke up this morning feeling absaloutely fine, no dizzyness or temperature, i tested my sugar and it was 2.7, so i had a small glass of full sugar coke and a bowl of shreddies (which is my normal breakfast any way) had my normal amount of novorapid... 3 hours later i checked because i was thinking about having some lunch, and despite going for a brisk jog and cleaning up in the house, my sugar had somehow gone right up to 29.1 !!!!! im sure you can imagine my reaction was complete panick, ive had dka 3 times when i was younger and nearly died from it, however i did not feel ill at all, which really surprises me because with a sugar of almost 30 id expect to feel like death warmed up. Anyway, i had 26 units of novorapid (i always need a fairly high dose to make any difference) and 3 hours later im still only down to 19.2.
I have no idea whatsoever as to what has caused this massive peak in my sugars, i have checked that my meter is working, and it is, i have checked my insulin is in date and it is, I dont feel unwell, and i am not stressed about anything. the only slight difference in routine is that my boyfriend has come home this morning after an operation and so is needing me to run about fetching drinks etc for him... but surely a bit more running about could not raise my sugars?! :?
i've been diabetic since i was 6, and am 20 now, so pretty used to my diabetes, but i must admit, this one has totally baffled me!
has anyone had the same kind of experience, or any ideas of what it could be?
any comments/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hi Tigs,

I get this quite often and have never worked out why, I think sometimes my body hates me.

The first thing I do is check it again on another meter just in case I get a dodgy reading which the xceed is good at doing. More often than not its just high and leaves me baffled.

hi
thanks for the quick reply! yeah i rechecked and rechecked several times, as to start with i refused to believe it could be that high, i sometimes go randomly high for no reason, but even for me 29 seemed waaay to high!I use the one touch ultra smart, but checked the reading on my spare freestyle meter, there was a difference of .3  also it seems like my novorapid is working VERY slowly, either that or something is still causing my sugar to go up and the novorapid is battling that :? i dont know, just seems really weird!

2.7 is probably low enough for your liver to release a quantity of glycogen as a last resort in order to raise your bg level - the classic liver dump. Subsequent reduction of bg level can be extremely hard work, from that number (29) I would need probably double my normal correction dose. You may also find that your insulin/carb ratio is substantially different in the morning, which would further increase your insulin requirements.

DKA doesn't automatically follow from high bg levels, it's a lack of insulin that triggers this unpleasantness. Hope your numbers are back to normal?

I often wake up low in the mornings, often i just get "LO" on the meter, but iv still never had such a reaction - hence why i dont get it!
and with the DKA - its onset by ketones, you get ketones if your sugar is high for a prolonged period of time, so when mine ran high for a long time (and by high, i mean high) thats what i ended up with! having diced with death once i dont really want any chance of it again, which is why i panicked slightly!
just tested my sugars again, 16.1 now.
All ive had to eat since was a sandwhich at lunch time, now im starving, but not sure whether to put off eating untill i have got my sugars down to a more normal level?

If really famished, try a boiled egg or a piece of cheese.

not strictly true, it's quite possible to maintain very high blood sugars and still not produce ketones, it's the lack of insulin that precedes and initiates their production, followed by the downward spiral into DKA. I can definitely understand your concern if you've been there before.

You should be able to eat and correct at the same time, just don't overdo it on either front.

Hi Tigs,
Are you on Lantus at the moment?
Jus

Hi tigs,
I asked about Lantus, as I had really unpredictable control, and unexplainable highs and lows amongst other probs while on it. I was also on Insulatard for many years, and although, and never had much stability on that either, despite resorting to splitting doses. There are many type-1s who just have problems on synthetic insulins in general, and find that changing to animal insulin solves gives them better control, and better health. Have you ever been in contact with the IDDT? They may be able to offer you some advice on the problems you are experiencing. The charity was originally set up to help diabetics experiencing problems with synthetic insulins.
Whatever the cause of your BG probs, I hope you get it sorted. :)

Sue, thanks for reply, although I wouldn't have thought it fit for moderators to answer questions on other forum members' behalf.

Hi Janabelle.

Moderators are here to help and assist. As the information is in tigs profile I thought you would have been glad of the information, but thanks for the advice. :D

Ken,
Thanks I had read it,but people don't always keep their profiles up-to-date.
Of course helping and assisting is fine, however answering questions for, and directed to another forum member is not.

Says who , Janabelle ? If a member is off line then moderators quite often answer questions to facilitate the free flow of the forum.

Janebelle I was with you on this one, and the responce from the moderators was a bit harsh, so as they say on Dragons Den I am out !!

How do you delete your account on here?

Well it comes to something where moderators being helpful is suddenly 'harsh' !

All I answered was and I quote,

No , she is not Janabelle.

Tigs profile is there for anyone to check if they so wished.

If you wish to leave Fujifilm then there is no ceremony , please feel free to do so if you wish.

Hi Fujifilm, I was feeling the same, until I got a PM, and read your posting. Don't do it!!
Jus :)
I've edited this since reading Sue's posting, might do the same-what an unfriendly intimidating bunch

Are you people for real....we help you out and give you information then you have the nerve to make us out to be some sort of villains.

Frankly, I am not bothered what either of you do. We are not here to be attacked and vilified by members.

gotta say, as soon as i see a janabelle post i know what it's gonna be about, though if you strongly believe in it then i do understand, but you cant blame every T1 problem on their synthetic insulin. + isn't the porcrine insulin synthetic now anyway?
