A little clue - the answer to your conundrum is in the lines

If you are diabetic some deterioration will show and over time it will be progressive - HOWEVER - and this is the important bit, the damage done is entirely linked to how well you manage your diabetes,

Look after yourself and you will still get problems as you get old but they will be nowhere near as severe and far easier to manage.

"By the way, retinopathy (or lack of it) has no bearing on whether you need glasses or not as you inferred in a previous post" I never said it did. I said at 56 I don't need glasses.

this is too difficult - "So why do you have it?" No idea. Possibly genetic. I was an Infantry soldier for 22 years and an Infantry orienteer. I used to run around 100 miles a week and still go to the gym nearly every day doing weight circuits and go running most days of the week 5 miles with a small back pack with 20lbs of sand in. I also go hill walking a lot around snowdonia. I also have an outdoors physical job.

Sharon Anne - Has your Diabetic nurse at your GPs not sorted you with a dietician to construct a specific diet for you and physio to design exercises for you?

Good for you. you are a fighter.

@Sharon Anne When I had my eye screening done at the hospital in February, the technician took the pic then said I would receive the results in two weeks by letter. It was not her job to comment on the picture. I think you would feel a difference if you had a problem so please try not to worry. Easier said than done, I know. Be sure to let us know how it turns out :)

Back to the original post. I've had screening at my local hospital for several years now. The person who does the test is not 'competent' to analyse the pictures fully so the results are mailed later. I usually receive a letter within 2 days which for the NHS is super efficient. I've always found the staff very good and friendly; fortunately so far no deterioration in my retina.

You have seen an optician recently so any damage would have shown then. You might have some background retinopathy that is too small to be seen unless the person is specifically looking for this but the fact that an optician saw no damage a couple of weeks ago is very positive news.

I have lost three stone and still have a long way to go but I will get threre, my consultant says mine in his opinion is not down to my waight but inherited. Sorry if my question has caused any upset it really wasn't meant to.

I am hugely obese and my eyes are fine.

For now. But at least the saying eyes bigger than your belly don't apply in your case.

The consultant also told me to stop sparring (which I love) on the grounds that it could damage my retinas and make things more difficult. But I heeded and stopped.
