eye test revealed an eye haemorrhage is it diabetes?

Hi

I went to the optians yesterday not for any particular reason although i do feel my eyes are sometimes blurry. the optician said that i had a small eye haemorrhage and that she would write a letter to my doctor so he can carry out tests, ie cholestrol, blood pressure and diabetes. The lady said that i should wait a WEEK, for the letter to the doctor so to make an appointment for a weeks time... i am a little concerned, and would appreciate any info that anyone in the know could advise me.. is this haemorrhage mean i have a high possibilty of diabetes? i know i got to have tests to confirm or not but would appreciate any info...my grandmother had type 2 which she had in her later life.. thanks
 
I am a diabetic with known background retinopathy. i asked the optician, last time I went (2 weeks ago!) if they often pick up diabetes on eye checks. She said she picks it up several times a year. Having said that, there are other things that cause eye problems. So you MUST wait for your doctor
 
I have had some eye problems over the years - no haemorrhage , though.

On one occasion I was sent directly to the eye clinic at the hospital the same day because it needed urgent treatment. It was painful, so I was very pleased just because of that! And it needed an expert diagnosis.
Another time It wasn't so urgent so I was given an appointment at the next day's clinic.
I have also been in the same position as you - a letter sent by my optician to my GP for her to follow up.

I would say that, from my experience, that as they are not advising you to see a specialist in the next day or so, it's nothing to panic about. But I am a lay person, so my thoughts might be completely wrong! You could wait to see your GP as your optician doesn't seem to consider it urgent - he/she would have phoned your GP if it was.
But if you're really worried, go and see your GP anyway

Excuse me jumping in? I am new as of a few mins ago.
I am interested in the outcome of this topic, as I too went for an eye test and was told exactly the same thing as you this afternoon.
In my case my new prescription seemed not as sharp as it should be. I put on my distance glasses this morning and thought they were my readers? I checked against my old glasses and i could actually see better with my old glasses, so i wnent back to the opticians after work.
He checked the prescription and it was correct. I then had a fuller eye test than normal , but also with a kind of lazer light which picked up that i had a small haemrorage in the seeing part of my eye, and my prescription had changed within 10 days!
He has written a letter explaining what he has found and asked for me to have ablood test, he told me to take it to my Dr's asap, which will be tomorrow. He think it could be either high blood pressure or diabetes?

How likely is it be diabetes?

I haven't seen what he saw, so I can't say for sure, butIt is quite likely that this kind of injury is caused by diabetes, but did he say anything about retinopathy?
You'll have to wait for a doctor to give you a diagnosis. I don't think anyone else is allowed to.
Do lt us know the outcome
 
Thankyou Hanadr, i have phoned the surgery this morning and got an appointment for 10-10am. So i hope to see what he says? The optician didn't mention retinopathy at all, just that there was a haemorage i the seeig part of the eye and it shouldn't be there? he also said my Dr would most probably refer me to a specialist , i think he meant an optician?
I am finding this forum SO useful, and i realise i knew nothing about or anything to do with diabetes, i was passing off symptoms as being a lady of a certain age? :wink:
Even if it turns out i am not diabetic, i shall follow a diabetic diet and therefore keep healthier from now on and lose weight. This is a wake up call.
I will let you know what the Dr has said when i get back home from the appointment. Good job it was my day off, isn't it?

My appointment was at 10-10am today, and boy was i glad i got in today?
Someone is definately watching over me?
My Dr, who is diabetic himself, did my blood pressure and it was sky high! He says he won't judge off that but, he'd like me to have another test next week. He said in the nicest possible way i was way over weight for my height, which is not good! He wants me to eat less and lose about 2-3 lbs a month? I didn't have a blood test at all today :?:
I have an appointment with the nurse to have full bloods, fasting test and under active thyroid test, as i was borderline a few years ago. And i also have to have a heart trace done if my bp is still high.
My appointment is for next Wed am, ( the earliest time i could get it for) and then we take it from there. I then have to see him in 10 days after that.
Sounds like i am ill with something or other, but which is it?
One thing he did say about alcohol when he asked me about it was, that i was to keep having hot toddy's? Apparently a little alcohol is beneficial to the heart. So i said to him, so i have to hit the bottle then?
My god, to think if i hadn't gone back to the opticians and just left my glasses thinking i would get used to them? Or if my glasses hadn't broken at work the week before,forcing me to get an appointment for an eye test, i wouldn't have known any of this, perhaps until it was too late?

Keep us informed of the outcomes of the later tests. Did he say it's the high blood pressure which caused the haemorrhage?.
If you need to lose weight, you can't do better then reduce your carbohydrate intake. It's great for diabetes and good for everyone else. If you reduce your bread, potatoes, baked goods, pasta, rice and Sugar, it can be relatively painless. Eat a tiny bit and savour it. Much easier and works better than counting calories. Easier to keep to as well!

Thankyou so much for your advice Hana, my Dr said he wasn't sure what had caused the haemorage? But that was before he had done the blood pressure check and got a high reading.
I will keep you informed and thankyou again for the diatry advice. Reduction seems to be the best option and coupled with more excersise that my Dr said to get will benefit me greatly, i am sure.
IF i am diagnosed with Diabetes, i will be far better informed by reading and understand things from this forum. I have just been reading Fergus' low carb options for type 2 diabetics. ( i am assuming i could be type 2?)

High BG high BP and poor lipids come as a job lot as so-called metabolic syndrome: even if your blood sugar isn't high enough for a diabetes diagnosis it's well worth heading it off at the pass by reducing your carb input, getting more exercise and losing weight: the former will make the latter two more likely to succeed.

I'd also make sure he is aggressive with your thyroid as this can also be associated with diabetes. Some people have spectacular improvements changing from a doctor who has let this slide to one who actually medicates the thyroid back to truly normal levels.
 
I will bear all that in mind, thankyou. I am hopeful i should get fair treatment as my Dr is diabetic himself.

I was not aware that an eye test could diagnosis diabetis. Lately i feel my eyes are sometimes blurry and really tired. Could this be diabetis? I was told by my mother that I should go to have an eye test but I am scared that i can have any seriuos problem.
 
Anitacuella - eye tests can't diagnose diabetes but they can pick up problems that tend to be associated with diabetes. For example, if they see you have retinopathy, they'll suggest you should get tested for diabetes as it is often a cause of retinopathy.

Do you use a computer for work or spend lots of time on it at home? That can often cause your eyes to get blurry and tired. If you are a heavy computer user you should have an eye test every year. I'm not sure about all opticians but I know Specsavers usually take a photo of the back of your eye (retina) to check for changes.
If you're worried you might be diabetic you should go to the doctor as soon as you can.
