The modern ones now are about the size of a shower cubicle. Alternatively, the can go onto the outside of the house.

We had a friend suffer a number of massive strokes a year or so ago, and they are looking into this now, to increase the possibility to staying in their current house.
 
Just a small offer of help - maybe get a toilet frame(s) before the need is urgent. They're really cheap actually, and a blessing!
