Last night I tried a new recipe and introduced a new food - pearl barley risotto - made with leeks, mushrooms, shitaki mushrooms, veg stock and Parmesan cheese - I used 40g og pearl barley - low G.I and 33g of carb - was delicious and even hubby liked it - and he hates risotto - great I thought something else to add to my recipe book

Tested the whole way through took my meds as normal about 10 minutes before eating

before meal & meds - 5.1
1 hr after - 6.3
2 hr after - 5.2
here's where it all changed - 30 mins after 2hr check felt really ropey - thought maybe I was too low and getting hypo signs (had all the signs I usually get when low) so did another check 9.8!! - never been that since early diagnosis - in fact never been over 7 much and a couple of 8's - anyhow - said to hubby - well that's that then no more of that - I must been feeling yucky because its so high - no more barley for me

THEN - 20 minutes later got up to do my sons medication - got to the kitchen - head spinning, sweating, didn't pass out but sort of crumpled gently to the floor - did another check 3.2

In twenty minutes I had dropped from 9.8 to 3.2 - why did this happen? - I did nothing different in my routine - was it the combo of food e.g) no protein or could it be stress related - I have a massive amount of stress this week and yesterday was pretty stressful.

Any thoughts or has anyone else experienced this - thanks in advance for your replies

Did you wash your hands before getting that high reading of 9.8?

I mean you could have been dropping but something on your skin gave an erroneous reading.

LL, my theory based on my own experience.

I would be inclined to doubt the 9.8 reading, maybe something you had on your fingers perhaps ? You have described the classic symptems of a hypo if we disregard the higher level.

Hypoglycaemia can be confirmed by using a diagnostic tool that is known as Whipples Triad.

1. Symptoms known to be caused by hypoglycemia
2. Low glucose at the time the symptoms occur
3. Reversal or improvement of symptoms or problems when the glucose is restored to normal

All your levels were dropping and I know from my own experience that when I haven't had enough carbs in a meal and I am taking medication then a hypo can occur. A friend fed me a meal which for her was more than adequate as a very low carber.......unfortunately for me......not enough carbs. My medication kicked in and I nearly passed out in a store not long after. A check of Bg level showed I too was down in the low for me 3 level. A few Glucotabs and a small 'carby' snack and I soon started to feel better. She won't make that mistake again !!

Now, you don't say how you reacted after the hypo.......did you treat it as such ? Did you test your levels later and what was the results ?

However, you also state that you got up........then you started to black out and crumpled to the floor ? Those symptoms can also indicate other things such as postural hypotension. Very similar symptoms, similar result. Are you on any other meds besides anti Diabetic ones ?

Stress is also something that needs to be taken into account. Has massive effects on BG levels and BP levels.

In the circumstances I think I would be inclined to suggest that you discuss this with your GP or DSN at the earliest opportunity to make sure that it was just a hypo and not something else.

Thanks both for your input - I took your advice Ken and spoke to DSN - she said same as you really to disregard the 9.8 as I may have read it wrong, something on my finger - she said that it is unlikely I dropped so quickly and as I had just had all my checks and it was an isolated incident she is not concerned it is anything else other than a hypo - have to get back in touch if it happens again - oh and STOP TESTING SO MUCH _ THERE IS NO NEED!!!!  (yeah right ok!)

I did treat the hypo with 3 glucose tabs and a couple of oat cakes - but didn't get chance to retest as my son then had a meltdown because he thought I was going to die - so had to prioritise the situation - poor kid is having a hard time coping all round at the moment - but worry about my diabetes is out of control - so have to play it down a lot - being a high functioning autistic teenager is not much fun - take a stroppy emo type teenager and times it by 100 - gives some idea what life is like in LL Towers at the moment :?
