Fasting BG

Hi,

I have read a lot on here and thanks to all those that contribute; for us lurkers it is really informative and helpful. This is my first port of call when I want to know anything about diabetes.

I'm type 2, and have been diagnosed since 2003 ish.

My question; why is the FBG figure so important?

sunny :)

I'm not sure it is! The idea is that if you're well controlled you'll have good fasting levels, and it's thus a general indicator of your diabetes. I'm well controlled, but have not great FBGs. I found testing more useful in working out what I could and couldn't eat, and in what quantities. So most of my testing was before, then 2 hours after different meal types.

I've been diagnosed a year now. For the first six months I couldn't get my fasting BG below 7, but the doc told me not to worry as my HBA1c was fine. Then the next six months I seemed to step change and was getting 6.x, and in the last couple of weeks I've been delighted to get as low as 5.3 a couple of times. Lost a few pounds, but only a few. Taken more regular exercise. So my view Is that my FBG is a good indication of my improved health and fitness.

Hi, thanks for your replies.

I started a low carb/diet programme (3 weeks now) and have noticed my FBG has dropped from double figures to single, with a 3.2 this morning (which is too low of course).

I had let myself go, so to speak, because of personal issues/trauma but 3 weeks ago decided I had to get a grip.

My BG rises during the day but that's because I'm drinking shakes at the moment. I wanted to lose weight quickly to motivate me it's already re-educating my eating habits. But they do cause a spike.

I agree with Grazer that I'm not sure the FBG test is of much value. As the the well-known early morning glucose dump can affect readings noticeably and arbitrarily I don't see the value in the FBG test. I value a test 2 hours after a main meal to determine how good the insulin response is; also the Hba1c.
