Fasting blood test

As a prediabetic, would it be enough to just test my blood once per day i.e first thing on getting up? I was told by the nurse I did not need to test at all yet I would like to monitor it. However the test strips cost a fair bit so I'm trying to strike a balance between affording them and monitoring. I'm have not received the tester yet but have ordered it.

If I was wanting to keep test strip use to say 7 or 8 a week, Id target testing over the week around just 4 different meals on different days.If you test before eating then 2 hours later to see how much the food increased my blood sugars - that will give you the same valuable information as a random daily test but will also give you a good idea of how your body responds to different foods and which are best / worst for your blood sugars

Thanks Boo. Another question about a fasting blood test - why does the reading increase if you haven't had anything to eat or drink? I only got my tester yesterday so still having a play and getting used to it. I have only done 4 readings in total at the moment but the one this morning was 6.8 - after no food and only water for 12 hours. The one prior to that was 6.2 so it seems fasting makes it go up?

Dawn phenomenon.
Your liver will prepare you for your day ahead.
It is natural and normal.
That is why if you are testing your breakfast, you test just before eating not when you get up, by the time you have prepared your breakfast it will have lowered a little.
The Important reading is the pre meal and two hours after first bite.
This will give you the information wether the food or combination of foods is okay or to be avoided.

Best wishes

The next step towards gaining an understanding of what is happening to your body after eating is to keep a record of your daily readings in a food diary.
The information you put in it, will help you and your doctors plan a treatment dietary regime which will suit you and your state of the condition.
It has helped me so much, in how food has such an effect on me.
And by experimenting I have found the food that I have to avoid.
Of course, my condition is quite a bit more severe in regards to treatment, but using a low carb lifestyle will almost certainly be a benefit to your health.
