Fasting Blood Test

Hi All

I have just been diagnosed Type 2, with a sugar level of 52 and 53 over two tests. Way back I remember whenever I had a blood test it was a fasting one. Both of my tests were not. The initial one was to check my kidneys because I was taking steroids for arthritis , but after two operations to put screws in my big toes, I have come off steroids.

Are fasting tests not carried out anymore?

A fasting test is a different one, it'll measure your current blood sugars. The one you did, the non-fasting, is a HbA1c which gives you the average of the past 3 months, weighing slightly more heavily on the last two weeks. You're not really bad off mind you, so with the steroids in your rearview (they up blood sugars too), you should be able to get your diabetes under control rather quick.

Yes, fasting tests are not normally done now for diabetes. The simple fasting blood test is pretty useless with the HBa1C being much more useful and doesn't need to be fasting. Fasting can be a bit more valid for measuring fats (lipids)
