HI , have questions that I hope the experts on here can answer. I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes yet but have a few symptoms so have been checking blood glucose which shows a lot of high reading late evening and early morning and a few spikes including one or 2 hypos which definitely gave symptoms. Have been to doctors and had one fasting test which came out as normal (5.5) . Questions are - do doctors normally ask to fast for 14 hours ? Guidance I have read says 8-10 hours . second question is - as alcohol can lower blood sugar and my test was on 27th December, Is it possible that a merry Christmas could have messed up (lowered) blood sugar before I stopped eating ?
I am 50, already have underactive thyroid, some arthritis and mild asthma

Your doctor perhaps asked you to fast a little longer to see if you have what's known as a glucose surge from your liver ,this sometimes happens when fasting.
Do you test before eating and two hours afterwards it does seem to be the best way of indicating wether your body can deal with carbohydrates.

Can you let us know what those high readings were that you mention? Normally fasting time I've been told is 10-12 hours. After that you can have a liver dump which perhaps was what the GP was looking for. If not, as a phlebotomist once told me, 14 hours is too long. Alcohol will only affect your blood sugar for the few hours following drinking it as the liver gets rid of it

Sorry for delay replying , have had fasting result as high as 7.8 , and reading as as high as 10.1 before a meal and also 2 hours after eating. I already have an underactive thyroid (diagnosed over 10 years ago and last test showed that as under control but getting slightly overweight and tired all the time for several months
