Hi Everyone,

It's that time of year again and a lot of people want to lose some weight before they head off. a lot of people with diabetes (myself included) believe it is really difficult to lose those pounds. however, it's not impossible. check out my progress picture from the beginning of this year. If anyone is interested in the diet I developed give me a shout.

Good job OP. Looks like more than diet though. Lot of gym work?

Awesome Andrew. After I was sick and out of Hospital I was able to gain about 10-lbs of muscle back low carbiing and lifting on 5-count till out right failure and the 2 more times with lower weights.

At min of 35g protein within 30-minutes of waking.

Nice one Runner2009.

I'm glad you got yourself back after feeling ill. Yeah breakfast time is heavy in protein for me too. In fact, most of my energy is from protein. I'll sort this diet out and see what you think - I think it should work for anybody but more for people who love sport.

Way l understand be careful as protein breaks down into glucose so possibly as you do a lot of exercise that's fine but for average joe public doing only light exercise or even moderate it could be a problem also you are t1 however as t2 are the main ones who lchf as we have tablets but diet is our main weapon then again a need to be careful about doing the same diet.

I developed this diet last year and I had close connection with my diabetic consultant and we both worked together. Protein wouldn't breakdown into glucose it would breakdown into either smaller peptide chains or single amino acids gaining energy from the breaking of phosphate bonds. Protein has a completely different chemical composition to carbohydrates. High protein diets are what we used to eat. Before heavy intensive farming carbohydrates were relatively scarce in the human diet and we had to get energy from protein and fats - the paleo diet. I find that because the nature of artificial insulin delivery isn't quite as precise as we'd like it to be I find that by reducing carbohydrate intake reduces the chances of you getting it wrong and in the long run you feel x10 better. I've had diabetes for 21 years now and I'd say since changing to this style of diet my life has changed for the better. The only reason I lost so much weight in that picture was I done a six week, six-pack challenge to raise some money for diabetes UK along with a cycle from Newcastle to London raising £800.

I supplement whey just to keep the cost of my diet down and protein levels up but that's nothing fancy. I use a low carb, low whey protein > http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-whey-protein/10530943.html. I train as a powerlifter. So heavy squat, heavy benchpress, heavy deadlift and heavy shoulder press. Alongside that for each training day I'll do bodybuilding style sets for the associated muscle groups with high rep ranges, mostly to failure. So I train Squats on Monday, Benchpress on Wednesday, Deadlift on Friday and Shoulder press on Saturday.

Fair play, looks like it's worked for you! With the protein raising BGs thing, us low carbers find that in the absence of carbs, you will convert some of the protein into glucose via a process called glucneogenesis. You probably don't experience this because you are getting enough glucose from your carbs. :)

Completely agree with reducing carbs giving you better control. Works wonders!
 
Hey Sam,

I'm a bit behind in my human biochemistry lol but yeah low carbs and high protein work wonders for me, you feel so much better/ sleep better. I'd never go carb-free, I tried it last year but my training/ sport suffered badly. A lot of Arnold Schwarzenegger's diet plans are really useful for diabetics, in fact,body-building diets in general are really good because they stay away from the bad stuff!
