Fats and Carbs - interesting article.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could live and let live!
It would indeed. I am just glad to read of someone having success with their particular regime, and picking up ideas and information to assist me in my search for solutions.

Well personally I cant see why everyone cant just agree to call it a low carb diet and have done with it, not everyone wants to eat a high fat diet and not everyone wants to eat a ketogenic diet.

So if it were just referred to as a lc diet or better still a low carb lifestyle then everyone could at least agree that it was not a good idea to eat the carbs we used to consume.
.

I completely agree, and I'm going to stop using LCHF and in future, just say 'I eat low carb' and 'ketosis works for me'.

I had never heard of LCHF until I arrived on this site, and only started using it as a shorthand for 'eating a lot less carbs than most, and adding in enough fat and protein that I am not cold, tired, hungry and bad tempered all the time'.

And while increasing the fat in my diet has improved my body-comfort and increased my ketosis time, I really object to people assuming that I must be spreading lard on belly pork, then frying it!

One other thing though - for decades anyone suggesting low carb was verbally crucified in the media. They were shouted down, criticised, treated with contempt and accused of ignorance.

Anyone remember the anti-Atkins media-fest when it reached the mainstream?

Public opinion (and that includes this forum) swings like a pendulum. At the moment, the weight at the end of the sting is swinging towards the fatty side. It's a reaction from spending so long on the 'complex carbs' side of the swing, but it will pass.

Who knows, one day we may reach equilibrium, and we will all sit around, slim, fit, comfortable and cured of every type of diabetes - bored to tears and with nothing to talk about! :)

Any extreme diet will receive criticism, not just Atkins. To completely exclude a food group will always be contentious and will never be fully accepted into the mainstream.

I agree - but then Atkins was never extreme.
He started with a strict two weeks (as do a lot of diets) and then told people to add carbs back in, in a controlled and steady way, until each person found their personal carb limit. Very sensible.

And he certainly never suggested excluding a food group. His recipes included a variety of salad and vegetables, with the inclusion of fruit, starchier veg and even grains, if the individual was able to continue to lose weight, while eating them.

At the end of the weight loss period, he suggested adding in more carbs until the individual started gaining weight -- their personal carb limit. Voila, a tailor-made diet for life, incorporating exactly the right amount of carbs for healthy weight maintenance.

The problem was that the media and pro-carbers all fixated on the 2 week induction, and never bothered to look further.

But then, when did the facts ever get in the way of a good vilification?

I agree but most people failed to get past the 2 weeks ! Well, most people I know who tried it anyway.

Yes, carb flu is a bummer. Ironically, it is also a good gauge of how much you need to avoid carbs.

The worse the carb flu, the more you will benefit by going low carb...

(I have no scientific evidence to support that statement! Just observation :))

I recently trundled over to the bloodsugar101 website where there is a calculator designed to prescribe the likely balance of nutrients needed for your body on a LCHF diet.
Can you post a link? I can´t find it.

For some reason, the site won't let me pick up an internal page link. Weird.
But if you go to the main page, click on 'diet' in the menu across the top of the page.
Then click on the 'nutritional calculator' icon.

I like LCKD, and I also like LCEF (low carb enough fat).

I do find it rather annoying when people obsess about the fat - no one is ever going to tie them down and squirt lard down their throat!
.
I would squirt cream and cheese down my own throat, though,@Brunneria. Love the taste, never feel full, but afterwards feel very sick.

I can't understand why folks get so het up about it all. I dare say I'll never understand the rationale of eating something which makes you feel ill. LCHF is not no carb - that would be possible but I for one am glad of it's existence and the positive impact it has had upon my health. That said , horses for courses! Am going to bed shortly so good night all! :)

I know @Scandichic
Don't deny that I have issues around food.

No that's not what I meant! :(
