Fatty liver

I was shocked to discover last year that I have fatty liver (it was discovered by chance when I went for a scan for what I thought was gall stones). I did not know this but fatty liver is part of the metabolic syndrome. I am struggling to lose weight although this has made me more determined to lose weight and get to goal weight once and for all as I am fed up of diabetes and all the health issues it brings with it. I was diagnosed in 2009 and what I would like to know is, if I put my mind to it and am determined enough, will I be able to 'reverse' my diabetes or is it too late? ie has my pancreas become too damaged now for the condition to be 'reversed' I hope this is not the case and that there are diabetics out there that have battled and come out on top with this dreaded and awful disease. Thanks
 
I have been diabetic for at least 10 yrs - diagnosed June 2006 and got into normal BG ranges last August. I am now meds free. Good luck with your weight loss/ reversal campaign.
 
I am afraid that no one can answer that...

Not every type 2 diabetic has the condition due to fatty liver - although MANY do.

IF you look at the latest info from the Newcastle Diet Study (not sure of its real name, but the info/data is all published on the Newcastle University website) you will see that PRofessor Taylor is currently seeing approx 43% 'reversal' rate at 6 months.

Those are GOOD odds, in my opinion.

Have a read of the forum. You will see many success stories, and discussions, but there are a number of recurring themes
- weight loss and reduced insulin resistance is ALL GOOD
- weigh loss and reduced insulin resistance is possible through any weight loss diet, low carbing, fasting and/or diet shakes (any method will get you there, eventually)
- reversal is possible for some, but no one knows who, or at what weight it will happen
- returning to old higher weight and/or old levels of carb eating will cause the 'reversal' to undo
- there is currently no long term data on 'reversal' durability
- whether they reverse or not, the weight loss and improved health from low carb and/or lifestyle and/or diet changes are often life changing.

Keesha, I don't know but it's a bit annoying that I found out 'by chance' otherwise I would never have known that I had fatty liver. I think people with diabetes should have a scan to check for this as if left untreated, can cause serious problems. I think it's probably due to costs and saving money as scans are not cheap.
 
Fatty liver is when your liver is fatty. High cholesterol is when you have a lot of cholesterol circulating in the blood.

Fatty liver is bad for us - non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and is a major cause of T2 diabetes. There is growing evidence that a diet high in carbohydrates will give us fatty livers.

Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that high cholesterol is not nearly as harmful for us as we have been told for the last 30 years (lots of new studies and books on this, and old-style thinking is slowly shifting).

When you have very high cholesterol, the doctor will always want to have your liver checked too, probably for fatty liver.

Hi keesha, I have fatty liver disease but I have a bmi of 22.5 now and I have got my hba1c down to 42 without T2D meds. My GGT was 102 a few weeks ago. HDL was fine at 1.6 and triglicerides were 1.0 but my total cholesterol was 6.8. The high ldl and high GGT is probably a response to repair toxic shock due to meds. It is no good as I see it blocking the correct response by the liver by using statins. Fatty liver, when it is the liver can be improved by low carb diets. See Southport GP on this site. As a measure to see if my ldl will come down I shall be cutting dairy saturated fat. Ps Gall bladder disease blocks the bile duct and raises GGT, there can be a number of causes of high GGT, one needs to get a liver scan to clarify. regards Derek

I was told that exercise can reduce cholesterol level.
My total cholesterol is high too at 6.7 but doctor said it was because my HDL was high at 2.48 and LDL at 3.37 and that pushes up the total cholesterol. My triglycerides is at 0.72. Doctor said nothing to worry about the high cholesterol.

Carina, look at my signature.

I went to the doctor 4 months ago with an unrelated problem and a month later he called me in to say I had advanced Metabolic Syndrome complicated by T2 diabetes.

Brunneria is correct in that there are no guarantees, but I decided firstly to get my head space right, then to learn and commit to life long learning, then take personal responsibility and embark upon a total and unequivocal lifestyle change.

Diagnosed 13/4/16: T2, no meds, HbA1c 53, FBG 12.6, Trigs 3.6, HDL .75, LDL 4.0, BP 169/95, BPM 85, 13st 8lbs, waist 34" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

16/6/16: FBG AV 4.6, Trigs 1.5, HDL 2.0, LDL 3.0, BP 112/68, BPM 6O, 11st 5lbs, waist 30", PWV 7.0. Lifelong migraines and hay fever gone.

Regime: 25g LCHF, run 1 mile daily, weekly fasting, occasionally longer fasts.
 
I am going to start the 5:2 diet recommended by Dr Michael Moseley from his book The 8 week blood sugar diet this week. I have already started cutting down my calories and carbs, I want to reverse this awful disease.
