Hello all,

I've been struggling with type 2 for a few years now, which maybe says it all about this post. Recently went to the docs and he routinely took a blood sample, I thought nothing of it...but the next day, when I was having a bit of cake he rang and told me my HbA1C was way high (over 100) and I should do something about it pronto or I'd be onto insulin...I'd become cosy on Metformin 3 times a day and as you've just read, was indulging in cake related activities between meals.

So, tomorrow I'm back to the docs after a very stressful month worrying about having to inject insulin etc. Don't shout at me...its probably not as bad as it seems to do that, but I just can't help feeling I should be able to do it myself and not have to inject insulin. Am I alone in thinking like this?

Would going onto slow release metformin make a difference? Could he just up my dose of it? See, Even after 4 years I still haven't a clue.

My trusty blood glucose monitor is telling me my 7 day average is 12.5mmol/L which is still rubbish... :(

Hi. I think you know the answer if you are overweight. You must adopt a low-carb, low-GI, small portion size diet. Set yourself a daily limit for carbs of certainly less than 200gm/day. The only occasional cakes you are allowed are those with no added sugar which means baking them yourself? I think you may have been relying on the Metformin, but sadly if will only reduce blood sugar by around 1-2 mmol. I hope you are able to tackle the diet. In the end, insulin isn't too bad. I started it 3 weeks ago and I'm amazed how easy and painless it is, but do try to avoid the need for it for many years yet.

Many thanks for your reply Daibell, yes I was overweight but managed to get down to my target weight earlier this year, well pleased I was, told the doc, who told me it was BECAUSE of my uncontrolled Diabetes that I was losing weight...thanks matey, I've not been this slim since I was 25!

Cakes are now a distant memory as is chocolate...I'm trying to do more exercise too, why is it so boring though? I need a dangerous and exciting aerobic sport!

Hi

Ivan like you (although without the weightloss success well done) views told I'd have to go on to insulin after my last test result. I have 3 months to change things.

I have started on low carbing although I'm not measuring my amounts if carbs it has to be significantly less than I was eating as I woukd have porridge for breakfast, a pasta or bread based lunch and then pasta or potatoes etc for dinner as well as snacking on toast.

I know it's probably not horrendous using insulin but at 32 I'd quite like to put off using it for as long as I can.

These forums are a great resource and I have already picked up some great tips x
