Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi - I was diagnosed in November with BG of 31 and with the help of metaformin - now on 500 x2 and Glicazide 40g i am now down to between 5 - 7 most days. I have lost over 2 stone excercise regularly, and was told by GP and Diabetic specialist that I could not come off tablets at all .
So my question is why do other people keep telling me that obviously it is all my own fault - I have always eaten well and excercised 4 times a week , and was not seriously overweight, although type 2 is in my family.
Sorry for the rant, but I am fed up with so called well meaning friends telling me how other people have done so well. one friend told me that she had cured her diabetes by stopping taking sugar in her coffee !!
Feeling quite depressed about it all

Basically it is because they do not know what they are talking about.
They don't understand the mechanisms of blood glucose and insulin resistance.
They have bought into the idea that type 2 diabetics are all fat lazy slobs (factually incorrect)
And they are rude.

Yes, they may care for you, but apparently they don't care enough to consider your feelings or bother to find out what they are talking about.

I don't have much patience for that mindset nowadays...

Amazing reduction in your numbers! Well done! You should be enormously proud of yourself.

It's the worst when you're doing the absolute best you can and people still make you feel like you're at fault or not good enough.

A fully justified rant, in my opinion. Sometimes I take people to task when they display ignorance and blame, but sometimes it just feels too exhausting to argue.

Your friend is a scientific miracle, it’s a wonder why her ‘cure’ of no sugar in her coffee hasn’t featured in the BMJ yet…

How frustrating for you. I wish I could say something more practical and constructive. Just know that you’re not alone and that at least there’s a community here that understands how well you’re doing.

If you want to keep spending time with these people I’d advise taking them to task about how their attitude makes you feel. And educating them can’t hurt either; they’re embarrassing themselves by holding court on something they know nothing about! And as @Brunneria says, they're displaying a shocking lack of consideration for your feelings.

Nobody really gets 'cured' of type 2. They merely have it under control. As soon as the diet blows out again that type 2 just marches back over the hill.

Drugs like metformin moderates the liver from releasing stored glucose. It can't really do much for what you choose to put in your belly. Probably why the sawbones has kept you on it.

Go easy on the kin folk and friends, they just don't understand. Neither did I until I was given the news.

People tend to talk out of orifices that get censored if I name them. Diabetes is a complex disease, with a gazillion contributing factors, and most have no idea it is everything but cut & dry. You have done wonderfully well! My gp took me off my meds because she knows I'm a tenacious one, and knew I'd stick with it... My specialist wouldn't've gone the same route because, as she told me, I wouldn't be able to keep the lifestyle change up. Glad she's not the boss of me! Basically, the lack of faith is your doc's problem, not yours. Probably saw a lot of people who decided popping pills was easier than working at this diabetes thing. You're doing excellent. Be proud!!!

Hi @rosajean well done on the numbers and your determination to stay as fit as possible for as long as possible. Your 'friends' are only reproducing what they have read and heard on the media. If only everyone was 'cured' by stopping taking sugar in tea and coffee, I would never have raised my bg. Well done on biting your tongue.

Just adding a bit of solidarity Rosajean. That is just so childish and I dont believe anyone “cures” or gets to prediabetic levels just cutting out sugar in coffee. Maybe she is jealous of what you have achieved so far. Keep going.

Thanks that's so encouraging

They're not so well meaning really and are totally ignorant of the facts. I wouldn't have thought just removing sugar from coffee would cure much, never mind diabetes. I'm always amazed at how a lot of people (not everyone) can was lyrical and pontificate about every subject under the sun, without actually having a clue. People will base their knowledge on what the papers say and we all know where that's got us.

Keep reminding yourself that you've lost 2 stone and got your BG down to reasonable readings, well done!

I have to admit that before I knew better and as a type 1 I would jokingly (but with some truth) refer to myself as a diabetic of the 'morally superior' kind.
Although you are having to bite your tongue please do your best to educate the public that diabetes is not a disease of 'walking deficient doughbut munchers'! It isn't a blame game and you have done fantastically so far and can keep helping yourself by dietary means bearing in mind that we all have different levels of carbohydrate tolerance (hence the miracle of the woman curing herself by giving up sugar in coffee - must have been dumping a wole bag into it for that to work!
I think you have done brillantly and in the past may have been let down by the general public health messages re eat low fat plus lots of healthy wholegrains plus exercise = health. It clearly doesn't for lots of people like yourself.
