Feeling a little low

I have had this Bronchitis now since 22 nd December and there does not seem to be any let-up. I really do not feel like eating meat, cheese, bacon etc. I feel pretty run down as it goes. Now I am wondering if I am missing some nutrients as I still have very dry skin, even with the increase of Olive Oil, butter, cream etc. I cannot eat the fat off meat it gives me serious heartburn and makes me feel sick. I am doing everything right, but I am not getting better. Usually, when I ate my pulses, quinoa if on the rare occasion I got ill, I pretty much quickly got over it. I have heard that some people can actually eat quinoa without a blood sugar rise. I miss my salads with just a few black-eyed beans in. I really do not always want to eat cheese, cream, eggs etc. Sorry to sound miserable. My hair is getting thinner also, my lips and hands are getting sore. I just do not feel well with this Keto at the moment. Has anybody else who is Pre-diabetic eat pulses and Quinoa without a BG rise? I have made an appointment with the docs,but cannot get to see him for a week yet.

Yes, I sometimes have some pulses, such as lentils or chickpeas, though not very often. Cooked, they are about 10g of carbs per 100g -- so I just keep the portions small.

If you are missing pulses and quinoa, it is probably worth trying them. Have a small portion and see how you react to it. Measure blood sugars one, two and three hours later.
 
I would suggest you try and get your doctor appointment shifted forward. It may be that you need antibiotics and to wait a week is dodgy. I was very poorly last summer with a bad chest infection - I also have asthma - and the docs were brilliant. Long saga which I won't bore everyone with but - definitely make a fuss to get a quicker appointment - before it turns to pneumonia.

I would also recommend steam inhalations - 4 times a day if you can. No menthol - just steam.

As for pulses - I can't comment on those as I hate them and never eat them.

Thank you. I will do. I cannot do anything till Monday now,but to be honest I do not feel up to going to the docs at the moment, although am feeling a little better. I have been suffering with very dry lips and skin. I looked up what could be the reason for this, and it mentioned being on a very low carb diet and being deficient in Potassium,Calcium and also sodium. I looked at all of the food with Potassium and nearly all we are not allowed to eat. My hair is also getting thinner. I am now getting really worried about this Keto diet. My skin has been noticeably softer and more supple since going back on to a low carb diet, I never get chapped lips - and I only eat peas and green beans, no other pulses, and few grains, though I do have Lidl protein rolls. All my carbs come with vitamins and minerals, not from grains or pseudograins, which tend to have a low nutritive value.
You can get salt which is a mixture of potassium and sodium chloride - that might help if you are not getting enough of those elements.

You can buy Lo-salt which contains one third sodium and two thirds potassium. It seems to me to taste just like ordinary salt. I found mine in Sainsburys. However it is not safe for people who have renal problems or who are taking a potassium-sparing diuretic.

Where I have to be careful is that I have to watch that there are no interactions with my medicine for my heart. I am on BP medication and cholesterol tablets, thyroid medication etc and medication to slow my heart rate. My cholesterol tabs have Calcium in.

Are you on Beta Blockers? Atenolol by any chance?

Grains have Potassium in. I used to always eat couscous, quinoa, and brown rice. I would also have blackeyed beans in salads at times,or just with cucumber tomatoes, red onion topped with olive oil oregano and lemon juice. These are the things that I do not eat anymore. I have not had any peas, although I do eat green beans.

The Patient Information leaflets that come with your various medicines should give a list of incompatibles.
 
Grains have Potassium in
High in potassium: potatoes, strawberries, chocolate and bananas. And here is Dr Axe's list of high potassium foods:

I have read that lack of potassium can cause cramps. So whenever I am aware of the slightest cramping in bed at night I make sure to use some LO-salt the next day.

I have recently been prescribed Atenolol for a fast heart rate (BP is normal). I did some research and discovered it isn't suitable for diabetics as it increases insulin resistance and also blocks the release of insulin by interacting with nerve signals to the pancreas and can thus lower insulin levels even when blood glucose is high. I have also read that it can cause a rise in triglycerides and a decrease in HDL (good cholesterol). I have made an appointment with my GP in the New Year to discuss this.

I know this isn't answering your question, but I wondered if you knew this. It was your comment about medication for a fast heart rate that alerted me.

I'm the opposite, as soon as I get a virus or infection I reduce carbs although I've not done keto often wish I had.
I'd say you are feeling rough because of the bronchitus and not to make any rash decisions. Butter in my diet has definately improved the moisture in my skin.

Oh my goodness that is not good. No mine is Ramipril been on it for 14 years. Have yearly checks and my blood have been ok. I was just looking it up,and it says that my medication can mask low BS that does not appear to be my problem. I hope that you get your concerns sorted Blutit. Although foods listed I eat. Maybe should eat more nuts. Have been eating Macadamia nuts quite on a regular basis
