Hi, so I’ve had T2 diabetes for about 13 years (I am 43). I had gene testing done a few years ago as I was told I didn’t fit the profile of someone with T2 diabetes which I believe never showed up anything. About 18 months ago I had covid and needed to be put on Trulicity and Insulin for a short while. I was only on insulin for less than a month and was taken off of it. I had Covid again in October and have been put on insulin again (4 x a day). I have also been given a CGM.

I am finding that unless I follow a low carb diet as well as taking my insulin my sugars go really high. I can’t eat cereals, fruit, potatoes, rice, pasta or bread. If I do and take more insulin my levels still go really high. I am fed up of eating meat and veg or salad all the time. I personally don’t know anyone else with T2 diabetes that has to be so strict and I’m really feeling fed up now
 
Sounds like you've had a hard journey for quite a long time and it's no wonder it's getting you down.
I don't eat any of the "harmful" things you list but I do eat a lot of fish, eggs, cheese, cream and yoghurt as well as meat and veg. I can also get low-carb bread, rice and pasta. They're not the same as the "real" thing but they fill the gap. There's also low-carb jam and pickle, rolls, cheesecake and other stuff. Plus I eat blueberries and raspberries. I find preparing food is an adventure. My weapons are lots of herbs and spices.
 
I agree. Eating low carb or even keto need not be boring.
There's loads of ideas and advice on the forum, have haven't good read around, and on sites such as diet doctor
Personally I choose not to use "manufactured swaps" for pasta etc, but I do buy low carb bread just for cheese on toast, yum

I also use a lot of the recipes from this site from an English family, so no American measurements. They do books as well
I bake most of their cakes in square tins, cut them into squares and freeze so when I want a little something I take one or 2 out.

Awww @HayleyW80 . You have been through the mill so not surprised that you are feeling fed up with foods that you eat. It's happened to me after losing my son so I understand in a way. I think we have ups and downs where our diet is concerned also. I had always had Greek yoghurt with pumpkin seeds and berries and got bored with it after a couple of years and right now I'm loving omelletes which I chuck in lots of fried red onion, mushrooms, mixed peppers, tomatoe and a little grated cheese and it's so tasty and filling. I really hope that you discover another dish that grabs you soon xx
 
Could you be LADA? Was that why you had gene testing to rule out type 1 or LADA out? It's not a diabetes diagnostic method I've heard of before.

Hi, Yes, I am also type 2 on insulin, I have had it 14 years now. But I still have bad insulin resistance, so have to stick to low carb. I am on a basal and bolus regime and have been granted a CGM on prescription as well - something I am eternally grateful for. But even though I am on insulin, I still have to be more careful in what I eat, I can eat potatoes - they give me a small rise but lower quite quickly within the 4 hour period the trurapi works for me but rice and pasta spike me badly and take ages to come down so I do avoid them. I do like cooking so like finding alternative recipes online I can cook, I do like thesugarfreelondoner she has some lovely recipes including one pot slow cooker ones. One thing that might be worth asking about is taking Daplaflozin, I have this and when taking it find I have to take less insulin- unfortunately, it can have some unwanted side effects in some and after taking fine for a good 9 months with no issues, I have some less then great side effects so have stopped at the moment. But have found my BS levels have gone up a fair bit and my spikes are higher so it’s literally just food like eggs for breakfast etc to go as low carb as I can and exercise so I don’t take so much insulin. until I think I can re-introduce it.

I absolutely understand where you are coming from though, it’s tough to have to be thinking about it all the time.
