Feeling fed up...high levels, hypos, diet, exercise....rant alert!

Morning all!

Well my sugar levels were 11.8 before bed and I woke to 10.2. I have had raspberries, fat free yoghurt, water and a latte for breakfast..total carbs 20g. So I have taken 2 units for that (am I right in taking insulin for fruit?!) And I haven't corrected. I haven't corrected in a long time but it used to be 1 unit brought levels down by 1..I wouldn't do it now as would be guessing.

I have omitted my morning run today as I want a genuine reading of my sugar levels without exercise effecting it.

So am I right in thinking if I have a veg omelette without carbs (I would normally have beans) this should give me an idea what my basal is doing, yes?

I must admit I like the idea of reducing my carbs as I eat so much...im just terrified of hypos with me looking after two little ones on my own all day.

Thanks alot.

Yes you still have to bolus for fruit/yoghurt as they still contain carbs, depending on your postprandial bg readings after your omelette you may need to bolus for that also, how much will depend on your bg readings so do monitor them carefully to decide.

Good morning :-)
I can understand the fear of hypos, especially when making changes to your regime and diet, been there, done that ! I find having Dextrose tablets always in the house and when out and about invaluable, as they are easily portable, act fast and often one tablet heads a hypo off if I crunch it as soon as I get a warning.
I don't find them particularly pleasant, but I've never been one for sweets, but they do the job and make me much more confident knowing I have them as a safety net .

Good luck with all this, it's not easy or even predictable, but so worth it :-D

Sounds like a good plan. I would have gone for a correction with breakfast but I think you have a really good argument about just leaving it as is so that you can see what things do on their own before you start messing with it.
Excellent thinking! Your overnight basal still looks good so I guess we just need to get your day time bolus doses right and work out what your corrections are and you will be set :)

When you do take up the running again be sure to test before and a little while after, also make sure you take some sort of hypo treatment with you... just in case :)

Good luck, sounds like you are heading the right way.

Thank you! I will probably post later a diary of today so you can see what it is like....I am writing every morsel down! Is there anywhere I can read up on low carbs for diabetics? As my biggest fear is hypos, I am wanting to know when to reduce my basal if I am going to go with reducing carbs....

Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks again.

Like AndyS I agree with your reasons for not doing a correction this morning but you are going to have to bite the bullet on that soon - you do need to know your correction ratio so you can do corrections safely. Ideally you would skip a meal to calibrate your correction ratio (so the bolus food and dose don't obscure the results of the correction). If you don't fancy that, correcting before an omelette-only lunch should give a decent approximation that you can fine tune later.

1u:1mmol/L is quite a high correction dose for a T1 of your body weight. DAFNE'S recommended starting point is 1u:2-3 mmol. You might want to try it at 1u:2 or 1u:1.5. That should be pretty safe, but keep the glucotabs handy just in case.

In theory, if your basal is correct, you won't need to reduce basal, you will just reduce your bolus dose in direct proportion to your carbs. (Well not quite, because you may have to do a small amount of dosing for protein and for the glycogen effect of stomach expansion).

Another way of looking at this is that low carb will show you whether your basal was too high, and show you if you need to reduce it. Just look at the daily difference between bedtime BG and waking BG, and reduce basal slightly if it's consistently falling overnight.
