Feeling low with nowhere to go.

Hi

Could someone please give me some advice on how to get a private diabetes check.

I have high blood sugar readings after normal carb meals 14.6 after cottage pie, peas and carrots.
7.2 after 2 weetabix and milk for breakfast. I have tried low carbing but couldn't keep it up without losing lots of weight. I have been to my doctor who is quite alarmed by my weight loss and said I was damaging my health being so thin and insisted I must eat. I have to go back to be weighed every 4 weeks (quite humiliating for a 45 year old woman). I have told my doctor that I can't eat and keep below 6.5 2 hours after a meal without losing weight. I did try eating lots of nuts, cream and cheeses whilst low carbing to try and combat this.

My doctor keeps telling me that it doesn't matter about the highs, its how it all evens out that is the most important thing and because my morning blood glucose is 5.0 I have nothing to worry about although I might get diabetes in 10-15 years time if I'm unlucky but it is very unlikely because I am not overweight.

I have also seen another doctor in the practice who said my meter must be wrong. This is the third meter I've purchased so I don't think that is the case. I also spoke to a diabetic nurse who said as long as my fasting was ok, there was nothing that could be done.

I keep reading on this site and others that it is damaging to your health to have high blood sugars but I keep getting told not to worry. I am now eating normally again now but I am not enjoying my food and to be honest not really enjoying life much either. I already have an autoimmune condition and worry about being around for my little boy if I don't look after my health. Should I try and get a private appt or do you think I am really worrying unneccessarily?

Thanks

Re: Feelinglow with no where to go.

Hi again blue pippy,

From this and other communications that we have had previously, it does seem as though you are over worrying about your blood glucose levels. It would seem from your posts that your doctors are more worried about your low weight at this stage.

Certainly, with fasting blood glucose levels - i.e. your morning readings - in the 5s and an HbA1c of 5.5% then whatever your diabetic state then you seem to be well in control of your situation - most of the time anyway.

My advice would be to try to relax a little bit more about your diabetic situation - whatever it is. If you are worried about the high peaks in your blood glucose levels that is sensible but just cut back on the starchy carbohydrate that you eat - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. It is those foods - i.e. the mashed potato in the cottage pie - that will almost certainly be causing the high readings.

Personally, I can take a lot of carbohydrate just so long as I eat it as fruit and vegetables. Why not try that - your meter will soon tell you if it doesn't work for you?

What happened to the "nuts, cream and cheeses" - they are all high calorie foods that should help you with your weight . Also, what about meat and fish - especially oily fish such as sardines and mackerel - they should help you with your weight too and do nothing to harm your blood glucose levels?

Best wishes - John

Re: Feelinglow with no where to go.

Thankyou for replying John, I really appreciate it. I did try a lot of nuts, yoghurt and cheese but just could not keep the weight on with the amount I could stomach eating, surely you are all not eating packs of cheese, gallons of cream and a kg of nuts every day?

Thanks for your advice, but I will try to eat a normal diet to gain weight, i've given up cutting back on carbs. I find that any type of carb has to be eaten in tiny portions if I am to keep my blood sugar below 6.5. If I'm going to damage my health, I just as well eat what I want in the process.

Best wishes

No - certainly I'm not eating like that. I limit myself to 20g of nuts per day - eat no cream and just a little cheese.

However, like many others, I don't have your problem of needing to gain weight. In fact the opposite is exactly the problem for me and many others like me - I count calories to try to lose weight.

Good luck with sorting out your dilemma - John

Re: Feelinglow with no where to go.

I use quite a lot of cream in my cooking and eat nuts. I have 45g of soft cheese for breakfast often and I'm SLOWLY losing weight[I need to]
