anybody have any experience of the above? I was given 4 different types of statins over 3 years and I was intolerant to each one , muscles cramps , unexplained aches in feet legs and thighs so I stopped taking them. Last month I was summoned to the doctors and prescribed bezafibrate. So far no noticeable reactions and all good. Does anyone else have any experience of this and did it reduce your cholesterol? Mine wasn't particularly high to start with 5.4 and I'm a type 1 diabetic. Why did they not offer fibrates before, I never heard of them but 3 years trial on statins clearly intolerant seems crazy.

I've just had my statin dose doubled (even though they said that if I wasn't diabetic my cholesterol levels are ok) Within two days I've been experiencing pain in my groin/hips, thighs, knees and now calf cramps.....After reading this I'm positive that it has to be the statin increase....Any idea if the bezafibrate is available in Australia???

I and a lot of people on this forum are intolerant to statins for your reasons. Thanks for introducing me to fibrates. Will look them up.

OK, I shouldn't take them because of contraindications for their prescription. And read the following

\I have found that a tiny controlled amount of Japanese organic red yeast rice works nicely as the original few thousand year old natural statin so that's what we use in my house but we're talking an eighth of a teaspoon a day. You can make up a batch and freeze what you are not going to finish in a week in small amounts/
Thanks for the link..... I have an underactive thyroid and don't need to enhance some of my symptoms that are listed as side effects!!!!

My memory of fibrates is that although they reduce cholesterol, they've never been shown to improve the incidence of CVD so taking them seems to be fairly useless unless your doctor is chasing numbers instead of health.
