Been at the hospital today for the follow up appointment with traumatology regarding my hip replacement . When I went last year they refused to do the operation as I have had 2 strokes and have diabetes so I am classed as high risk to operate on. I was sent to the pain clinic who found some of my pain was neuropathy in my leg and of course the other pain caused by my hip . After 9 months of various heavy duty pain killers and having turned me into a complete zombie they signed me off and sent me back to original consultant.
After reviewing my case the doctor has decided the only thing to do is to operate and I am now on the waiting list with all the pre op tests booked . Yippee why did I have to suffer all those months at the pain clinic when they knew they would have to operate I feel like I have lost nearly a year of my life messing about but all comes to those who wait !

Oh Connie I am so sorry they have messed you around like this. Do you know how long the waiting list is? I hope it is sorted out quickly for you. I know what it's like waiting for an operation, you tend to put your life on hold. It will be so good for you when it's over and the pain levels drop.

I'm sure it's all about ensuring all options have been explored before exposing a riskier patient to the operation. I know that probably doesn't feel good to you, but there will have been a requirement, based on a risk tariff, somewhere.

I have an appointment 25 May with consultant to go through the pre op results and if all ok probably 4/6 weeks after . I live in Spain so the waiting lists are not too bad here fingers crossed

Yes I think your right but I just want to be able to walk about like I used to without having to continually sit down and wait for my hip to rest.

Good luck, connie, glad there is a light at the end of the tunnel, look on it as good news , the waiting is nearly over...
Waiting times are really awful though....x

I went through something like that. I had excruciating hip pain for 2 years before the hospital diagnosed arthritis and I needed a total hip replacement! The first doctor I ever saw said I had a trapped nerve! After many times back and forth to the doctors and hospital I was told it was pain un my back but referred to my hip. I kept saying it wasn't and that it was my hip. I was also back and forth to a pain clinic trying to get some relief from the pain, I tried everything from paracetamol to methadone and nothing worked for the pain. Finally it was diagnosed I had the replacement and was at last pain free!!

Hi. There is no reason for diabetes to affect a decision to operate. The surgeon just needs to understand how good your blood sugar control is and if necessary administer insulin or whatever around op time. I had a foot op a few years back and my blood sugar was constantly monitored before and after the op. If it's in the right range there won't be any infection concerns. I understand the stroke concerns though.

Good luck and hope the operation goes well Connie.
