Hello everyone!
My name is Jen and I'm new to this board. I have been suffering for years with what I now know to be reactive hypoglycemia. I knew I wasn't diabetic but also knew that I reacted very badly to sugar, coffee, alcohol, tobacco smoke and too much exercise. Frequently, I get a horrendous low with extreme exhaustion, cold hands and feet, shaking, a feeling of nervousness and dizziness. It is always about 2 to 3 hours after consuming sugar etc.
For years this condition has bafled me, until last week I met with a cardiologist who suggested I could be suffering from reactive hypoglycemia.
Having spent the last week reading about it, it fits in perfectly.
My symptoms first started in puberty and then became very bad when I was pregnant with my third child.
My GP will refer me to an endocrinologist, but I want to make sure I get a good one who understands this condition.
I live in Ealing, London. The cardiologist I saw (for benign ectopic heartbeats) is based at St Thomas' Hospital.
If anyone has experience of a good hospital I would be very grateful to hear about it.
Many thanks
Jen

Hello Jennifer and welcome to the forum. :)

I was not aware that you would have a choice of endocrinologist if your GP is referring you. I rather think you will have to see one at your local hospital which would appear to be St Thomas - and it is not a bad place to start. 8)

Hope all goes well for you - let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply.
I seem lucky that my GP will refer me almost anywhere in West London.
Ealing is my local hospital but no-one goes there by choice!

Your medical problems seem rather specialised. I hope you are 'sorted' soon.

Ealing is our local hospital - we live in Norwood Green, but we never go there for medical attention. We do go to the gym for heart rehab twice a week - my wife had a heart attack a few years ago & has recovered well. She was in Heston swimming bath - just got out of the water when she collapsed, so was taken to West Midx - much more civilised, & you can visit without paying the exorbitant parking charges. We've got a yellow pass for our gym sessions in Ealing.

I have a blind diabetic friend who is under the care of Ealing, & even with her disabled pass parking is a problem.

Hi Jen.
If you need to go to hospital to see a specialist, you have the right to choose which hospital you're referred to by your GP. This legal right, which was introduced in April 2009, lets you choose from any hospital offering a suitable treatment that meets NHS standards and costs.

Here is the link to the NHS Choices website which expalins all together with other links:

Hope that helps. :D

Thanks for replies.
What I'd really like, is a recommendation for a London endocrinologist.
They differ so much that I want to make sure I get one who understands reactive hypoglycemia.
Thanks

Anybody who does want to recommend a HCP (Endocrinologist) please use the pm system as names are not allowed on the boards.
