That depends what you do with the results of the finger prick and how often you prick today.
Pricking to do nothing (or to just write it down) seems of little use.
Pricking to gain input into your insulin calculation makes more sense. In that case, you should prick at least 4 times a day.
However, that also depends how many times a day you will be eating.
It is described as "4 times a day" because most people eat 3 meals a day and you need to inject fast acting insulin for every meal and long acting once a day.
If you don't eat breakfast, you may not need to inject or test in the morning. Whereas, if you snack in the middle of the afternoon as well as your 3 meals a day, you may need to inject fast acting and test an extra time.
The great thing about basal bolus regime is you can eat what you when you want how often you want and change it every day.
