Hi everyone, I'm a newbie,.
Have just been told by my doctor that I am pre diabetic,
I moved into an independant living accommodation just over a year ago.
I am on my own since my husband passed away almost 8myears ago, so decided to move back to Wales where I was born & where my eldest daughter is hoping to move near me in the future .
The accommodation is very good we have up to 9 residents , we have 2 meals a day , lunch & tea, breakfast we do ourselves in our own apartments.
Since moving here have put on weight , food is very good & guess I made a pig of myself.
Used to be quite active , but back problems have reduced my walking unfortunately.

Would be very happy to hear from you , of any foods which would help me to lose the weight that I can pass on to our housekeeper which should help me.
Breakfast for me is Weetabix , with one small teaspoon of brown sugar , & some blueberries , think this is ok for me .
Our cook is great her cakes are lovely , but now I have stopped eating them.
So some main meal recipes would be great .
Thank you for allowing me to join .
Cheers Glynys.

Hi @Glynys. and welcome to the forum.

Weight gain is often a symptom of (pre)diabetes. Yes, often it is your body failing to handle the amount of carbohydrates we eat these days that causes our blood glucose to go very high and our insulin to rise in order to deal with it. Insulin is the fat storage hormone (amongst other functions).
All carbohydrates turn into glucose when digested (starches as well as sugars). This means things like potato, bread , pasta, breakfast cereals as well as cakes, chocolate, tropical fruit (like banana) , fruit juice as well as sugary soft drinks.

Possible alternative breakfasts include eggs (boiled the previous day if you like a cold breakfast) or Full Fat plain Greek yogurt with a handful of nuts/seeds/berries.

Here is a link to a blog which gives more details: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html

@Glynys. Your cook might like to look at the recipes of the sugarfreelondoner site, as they are very good and are also low carb, which many people might find an advantage - though if anyone is using insulin or glucose lowering medication they should be informed of the carb count of what they are eating.
I use swede instead of potato, also quite a bit of cauliflower and find that it really reduces the number of carbs on a long term basis.

An obvious thing to stop is the sugar on the weetabix, and you could try one biscuit instead of two. Beyond that, it's a matter of reducing carbohydrates & sugars. If they serve something with potatoes, pasta or rice, simply halve the amount you are eating. Weigh yourself once a week at the most - first time in the morning is good - if you are losing 500g - 1kg per week that's good. Your weight will drift down until it stabilises.

I hope you can get some help with the back pain, which unfortunately can be one of those self-perpetuating things - you walk less as your back hurts, so your back hurts because you walk less. If you can get help from a physio that might help.

Thank you all for your welcome , much appreciated.
Your help too is welcome.
I agree with Catsfive about back problems I am getting physio , which is helping , so hopefully will soon be able to walk more.
Good idea Resugam about using Swede instead of potatoes.
Thank you all for your info & help.
Hoping things will improve now.

You could try celeriac as well.

Yes, my wife and I use celeriac as a substitute for potato, you can even use it raw and grated in a salad.
Celeriac is around 6gms carbs per 100gms versus swede (rutabaga) at around 9gms per 100gms.
