Hello there!

I have never wrote a post before but get a lot of help from reading what other people discuss

My son is now 9 and was diagnosed with type1 a year ago

I have just booked our first holiday abroad since his diagnosis and as a single parent am a little apprehensive with regards to travelling, how the warm weather will affect his levels along with days swimming in the pool etc

Just wondering if anyone can offer any help and advice for me to hopefully reassure me that diabetes won't take over and ruin our holiday in the sun

He currently injects levemir evening and morning and novorapid throughout the day

Thank you in advance
:)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I am sure you will have a lovely holiday and it is usual to feel apprehensive.

I will bump your post up for a Type1 to reply.

Hi Joey,

Please take enough medicines (supply enough for at least 3-4 days more than required). Ensure that the insulin/ medicines are always kept below the maximum recommended temperature.
Keep a copy of prescription of medicines with you. Also, don't forget to take some candy/ glucose with you as a precuation to take care of hypo if happen.

Joey, good advice so far. Not sure where you're travelling to but if it is hot there are items called Frio Bags ( look on Amazon ) which are great to store your insulin in and will keep it cool. Many people find hot weather increases insulin sensitivity so you may well find that you need to decrease dose slightly. Just keep testing BG regularly and don't let let the diabetes spoil your trip. No reason to stop your child enjoying swimming and any other activities.
