Hi all.........Was diagonosed Type 1 oral last week, came as a shock..................Anyway took the time to read everything I can, have a session with practice nurse next week for an hour............My question is I have just 5 mins ago tested my blood on an accu mete and itas reading 17.8.......................What does that mean if somebody can tell me.

Many thanks

Dave

Dave,

Provided you carried out the test correctly, it means your blood glucose is way to high and needs to come down, normal levels are 7 or below.

I am not sure what you mean by 'type 1 oral' , are you on meds now, and what advice has your nurse given you to control your blood glucose between now and next weeks appointment?

I have to take tablets twice a day..............No info re blood glucose from Nurse, did have a call on fridayto say that my NCA1 or something like that, was not being managed correctly, when I asked her what that was she didnt know and tols me to speak to the nurse next week.

Dave/milpol.
Your profile shows that you are a Type 2. You are saying here that you are a Type 1 on medication.

This is confusing us all as if you were Type 1 you would be on Insulin.......can you clear things up for us please. This will allow us all to then better help advise you.

Hi
Sorry to hear of the diagnosis - it is a huge shock, no matter what type we are

In terms of your readings - not great to be honest, but you have only just started meds and need to give it time. However could you set it in context - ie is it after eating, what did you eat, what meds are you on?

In terms of advice - best I can give is that sugar is not the enemy (well it is, but not conventional considerations of sugar) but Carbohydrates (which turn to glucose in your body) need to be monitored. So, you may be told to avoid sweets, choc, sugar, eat low fat but healthy grains, brown bread , pasta etc are fine

However, they arent. EG pasta will cause a worse rise in bg than a teaspoon of sugar (for me, as least) but wont hit it as hard. So might get a sharp rise in bg for sugar, but rise for pasta will be worse, just not as fast

So, maybe start looking closely at diet, and if meds need put up then the cominbation of two might help in the first instance

Hi Everybody,

I am also a first time user on this board. I need some advice. I have type 2 diet only and have been like that for 3 yrs. Have 6 monthly checkups. However last time my blood sugar had risen to 7.1 no ones fault but my own l might add!, Dr wanted to put me on tablets to which l declined and asked him for another chance!, anyway... have been following ww diet and have lost just over 2 stone in 8 weeks, but l seem to eat a high amount of bread/rolls, l eat wholemeal granary bread/rolls but keep reading on here that you have to be on a low carb diet.. yet when l went to the hospital when first diagnosed they said that carbs are to be eaten at every meal!, l eat 2 slices for breakfast as in toast, sandwich lunch times and sometimes 2 rolls in the evening with some soup as main meal. After all that my question is... a, l eating tooooo much of it! and can you give me some tips on what l should be eating.

I look forward to hearing from you.... so glad there is a forum for this

Hi Cazzie
You don't *have* to low carb. Some of us do. But initially if you want to bring down that 7.1 then you could cut a few carbs out and replace with something else, or at least take out the root veg and pasta and rice sort of things, and then decide how you want to tackle things long term. It is the carbs that go to glucose which is why some people cut them out a lot and others do a low GI diet but you have to decide for yourself which route to take. If you read the low carb forum you'll get ideas for what else to eat, but as I say, it's not the only route.
Let us know how it goes!
