First Visit To Diabetic Nurse!!

hi,
i have just had my first appointment with the nurse at my surgery, (apparently she is not a diabetic nurse, but has an "interest" in diabetes!) :?
As i walked in the door she asked" can you tell me why your still only on one metformin tablet per day, when your meant to have been upped to the 3 a day by now!" i said no, i was just taking what the doctor told me too! Basically, the whole consultation felt very "old school diabetes treatment" compared to what i have learned on this forum. She looked through by BG history on my meter, and said " how many times a day are you testing" I replied three times a day, to which she replied theres really no need for you to do it that much! once a week , for a day will be plenty! i said that i cant see how i will know how im doing without testing, and she said they will tell me how im doing!
to be honest, it felt like a waste of time, she almost told me off because she hasnt done a full diabetic assessment , ie checked my feet, weight etc, and i said ive simply done whatever the doctor told me to do!
Im not a naughty child, im a full grown woman who wants to be in charge of her own health.
Feeling very dispondent as really thought i would get some progress. I am going to the DESMOND course in May, but just hopw its not the same type of thinking!

This is typical of some of the things we see on this Forum. HCP's treating Adult's like naughty children ! Makes my blood pressure soar.........

I have said it before and I will say it again......I have the greatest of respect for ANY HCP but I personally will not be spoken to or dealt with as if I am just to be 'instructed' and have no say in the matter. I also disagree sometimes and let it be known that if I feel something is incorrect or not suitable for me then I will state so, whatever the HCP thinks.

All I would advise anybody to do is to politely but firmly tell these people that I am the Patient and also deserve respect. I do not take kindly to lectures or dismissive behaviour from anybody, however exalted they may think they are. If you are sure of your facts then say so........

We all have to stand up and 'be counted' as they say......I know that not everybody feels confident or maybe even arrogant enough to do that.......just do what you feel comfortable with.

Hi Aly
I too am new to this site and have learnt quite a bit, i have had my feet and eyes checked and both are ok im not sure if my nurse is a diabetic nurse or not will have to ask her when i see her in may. I go on my desmond course tomorrow and hopefully i will learn a bit more. 1 thing she adamant about is i will not be given a meter until im on insulin when i asked her why not she said we will keep an eye on your blood sugar so i bought 1 of ebay its a Accu-Chek Aviva it cost me 12.00 in total and have checked online the cost of strips 28.00 for 50 from boots . I feel as if my life is now being run by the health carers as im just recovering from breast cancer so at the moment im either at the hospital or at the doctors and no time left for anything else. Keep in touch and stay safe ....

I have been known to tell an HCP that my IQ is not in inverse proportion to my BMI. That usually stops them in their tracks while they work out what I mean! If they are rash enough to ask them for the figures, I tell them . . . works best if you're obese!

I'm blessed with a GP and a practice nurse who treat me like an intelligent human being. Unfortunately our diabetic specialist GP doesn't

I still go all meek and mild in front of doctors - it's the way my generation was brought up - and I find the only thing to do is to go really well-prepared. The lists of questions on this forum are a great help!

My GP's practice have been absolutely great and I know I can ring any day and ask whatever questions I like without being treated like a child.

However, having found this forum the first day I was diagnosed and read and read and read coupled with both parents being type 2 insulin dependant, I found DESMOND bored me stiff. If you have taken time to educate yourself be prepared to go to sleep for the day lol!

It baffles me why some HCPs do not have the people skills necessary to treat people according to their keenness to learn and IQ!

Having said that I had to laugh when a Doctor I haven't seen before asked me if I had taken a look at my throat when I rang to discuss a throat and ear problem I had had for 4 + weeks following a severe chest infection. I have insufficient hands to juggle a mirror, torch and tongue depressor simultaneously.

had my second vistit two weeks ago andit did not go well told i was going to have a heart attack because of cholastorol (6.1).the nurse asked me what i had eaten the day before,i told her
shredded wheat, pumkin seeds dried fruit and sunflower seeds --breakfast
ham salad sandwhich multiseeded bread--dinner
two sausage,roast veg--tea

and she said "am eating far too much sugar, that will make you diabetic"
hab1c 5.8
i told her i was thats why im here
pause for the awkward silance and then thanked her for the waste of my time, and left.
spoke to doctors receptionest on my wayout. the nurse was a locum, the normal nurse was on leave and would be back in two weeks, got an appoitment next week with her and well start again.

similer story but different circumstance i was rushed in the meat wagon to a+e which my care worker had wrang as i was really ill. I got taken to one of them cubcles in a wheel chair into a room where (a GP) Nurse was sitting on a chair the second i was wheeled in she started slaging down my care worker for phoning 999 and that she should have called my GP. Anyway she went on and on
Telling me that i should'nt be on this and that medication until i blew a gasket with her and i mean blew a gasket "firstly i asked her what the cows muck do you know about my illness are .I added to the matter that she had the bedside mannor of a Rat at this point my wife turned up from work and walked in to the cubicle and the Gp stuttering said to my wife that i and her had fallen out but were ok now. Even the GP's assistant smiled at me behind the GP's back as if to say good on you .I think this DR must have been trained off atos . The moral of the story folks keep pushing and pushing then more pushing as us diabetecs get the raw deal where nhs don't really give a atoss about us .Always explain that you need to test regurly so you can see if your safe to drive    even if you don't drive a car it could be a bycicle it's all about being safe :D :D :D :D :D
