First week over on Pump

Hello folks,

Just left out of hospital today after going in to set up my Animas 2020 Pump, here in France!
The first night had a couple of hypo's which were to be expected, and nurses woke me on the hour during night to ensure everything was ok!
We set basal dose at 0.5 per hr and over the week set up bolus amounts for my breakfast, lunch and evening meal, which are great!
My bloods are staying between 7mml to 10 mml per glucose checks, which we want as i've no hypo awareness!
Changed the site and the reservoir daily in the hosp to get confidence etc!

The difference on the pump is huge for me, have got more confident about not having hypos etc!

Can't wait to return to Ireland next month and stick it under the nose of my Irish consultant who would'nt recommend I have it!

The service and respect show to me by the french nurses and doctors was huge and they involved me in everything we did about the pump!

Looking forward to many years of using the magic little thing :D

Well done Richard..

Just be aware that out of hospital settings and getting back into normal living, you will (more than likely) having to change basals and bolus rates.

Sounds fantastic that you got such care inside the hospital and gaave you a lot more confidence to use your new best friend.

Sounds like its going great so far!

As DDogs says when you get back to everyday life you may find you need to tweak things a little but looks like the medical staff in france have made sure your confident in doing so, changing sets and the resevoir too!

It's great you can feel more confident already about hypos especially if you have no awareness.

You may even find if you have less hypo's due to good control on the pump you might get some awareness back too!

I don't recall you mentioning a HBA1c but if theres a vast improvement on your last one when you have one with the pump, i would be waving it under your irish consultant's face singing 'look what me and my pump can do' :lol:

its amazing isnt it ive heard of very few people who try the pump and dont like it its such a shame everyone cant have the opportunity to try one but i suppose at least its getting better.

good luck with the next few days im sure u will love it like we do it improves things no end

Richard that's great news that you're enjoying the pump. My daughter has the Animas and we're delighted with it, but I think we'd be delighted with any pump. I knew the pump would make it better for us but until a few weeks into pumping I nevery realised just how much of a big difference it would make. I think everyone who wants a pump should be offered one.

I'm also on my first week out of hospital on the Animas - and in France!! I agree, the French system is fantastic and my week in hospital, although tiring on the language side of things, was invaluable. Watch your levels when you come out thou as life in hospital was very different to my life at home and at the moment I am testing all the time to re-adjust my levels as I was running low a lot during the day when I was pottering. I too am trying to run at around 8ish as BP (Before Pump) I was happy at 12!! Good luck.

Am eating a lot more and more active now so starting to adjust my rates to match!
Last few mornings woke with bloods between 12-14 mml, so trying to up basal rate during night to sort this, otherwise all during the day everything going well!
Strange thing now is when my levels go into 4-5mml, i start to get strange feeling, and I"ve had no hypo awareness for past yr! Could be change of insulin and pump :D

Everything is going well, still no air bubbles either :D
