Hi guys,

Not sure where to put this so thought I'd put it here. Long story I'll try to make short. My OH is in the navy, and was on deployment supposed to be back for xmas, only 2 weeks before his return I was informed he wouldn't return until this year, so as you can imagine I was pretty upset. I live in a navy community, with limited support. The diabetes care up here isn't as good as what I had back home. 10 days after that letter I had a fit, which I assumed was a diabetic seizure, although I had no hypo symptoms. I've been on a pump for 4 years (diabetic for 21) and this is the first time this has happened.

Since then, I almost had a fit again, having a severe hypo in asda. My sugars have not been the same since, and have been going from 16-20 to 3-4 in the space of an hour. I've tried multiple basals, temp basalt. editing my carb factor, literally everything I can. Today I had enough and called the DSN, who didn't have a clue what to do. Has anyone ever had this before? I get this feeling which I can only summise is anxiety whenever I am in a shop, as I was on my own in a shop when I fit. But the strange thing is, apparently I wouldn't let no one put anything in my mouth, yet when the ambulance got there 6 mins after I started fitting, my BG was 5.3. Just wanted to see if anyone had any advice or tips, or had experienced this before.

Thanks,
Joe.

Hey @joehutch :)

I was diagnosed with epilepsy in November 2014 after very similar episodes to yourself - I'd get knee jerks/other symptoms synonymous with hypos, despite the fact my BG was totally normal. After these symptoms I would hit the deck & have full on tonicclonic seizure. This had been happening for YEARS and got missed by everyone. It was only after my most recent (September 2014), that I got sent for an MRI/EEG where they discovered the epilepsy - I'd been living with it for at least 10 years!

Definitely get your doctor to investigate :)

Also, what you described with people being unable to put things in your mouth, when I fit, my jaw clenches up (unfortunately usually on my tonuge which results in a real mess on my tongue with chunks missing!)

I also have epilepsy and the symptoms described by OP sound like me a little bit before I have a full on tonic-clonic seizure... For what it's worth, go to your doctor and let them decide the best course of action.

Thanks for the replies. My doctor has referred me to the neurologist so hopefully it'll be sorted soon. Spoke to DSN again and she seems to think the same.

It is no longer part of seizure management to place any object in the mouth. This damages teeth and soft tissues. You need to go to the GP. Seizures may be nothing to do with diabetes and there are many causes. Anxiety can be an aura preceding a seizure, or just anxiety, particularly if it is situational. This can also cause blackouts which may appear seizure-like in nature. So of to the GP please....
