hello!
I thought that diet coke was alright for low carb diet. Unfortunately I read on dietdoctor that it increases insulin and it lowers ketones. What is your opinion on this? Is there any alternative ? thanks!

Not everything you read on the Internet is true.

It's a bunch of BS in all honesty. Otherwise, all of us with T1 would be drinking Diet Coke, lol.

If it increased insulin? I'd be drinking gallons of it.

Actually, I do drink about 2 liters a day. Absolutely no effect on my diabetes, insulin, glucose, or ability to stay in ketosis.

I think what he means is that a common problem in T2 is that your body produces ever increasing amounts of insulin to mop up increasing blood sugar, but insulin resistance means that less and less of the insulin produced can be effective; there is some evidence that the body can be "tricked" into producing insulin by food or drink that mimics sugar by being sweet; hence it is possible that diet coke could be triggering increased insulin production, which in conjunction with insulin resistance is a bad thing.

Another argument against diet drinks is that while we keep consuming sweet-tasting things we'll never kick the craving for real sweets.

Personally I dislike the taste of pretty much all fizzy drinks apart from champagne, so it hasn't been an issue for me.

I ate a whole salami now. And I craved diet coke afterwards. Now I still feel hungry and I crave pizza and diet coke. I think the initial consumption of the salty salami triggered my coke craving. And subsequently my coke craving triggered hunger and carb craving. I tend to think diet coke is definitely involved in the carb craving and overeating.

For some people that can be the case. You can't really quantify a "Craving" so it's different from person to person.

You are right. It will vary from person to person. I don't see how a fizzy drink of diet coke/pepsi max now and again can be of any harm? We do a good job as it is without restricting it further lol.

sorry but maybe type 1 pathophysiology is different
I am mainly referring to type 2 people with cravings and overeating

I drink diet drinks and I don't get cravings - I have a glass with my meals every day and I very rarely crave anything - I don't eat anything sweet anyway - a couple of squares of 90% choc a week. I think if you have a sweet tooth it may be more difficult

Self-control is self-control and it makes no difference whether or not you have type 1, type 2, or if you don't have diabetes at all.

If you're looking for responses specifically from people with type 2, perhaps you should mention that in your original post next time.

Yep I did that at your age too. I so wish I hadn't. I thought it wasn't doing me any harm but think about it....all those additives, they can't be good for you can they?. I ended up with fatty liver and insulin resistance and T2. At your age after having had my two children I weighed around 120 pounds. I became more than twice that and the 2 litre a day habit took me many years to break. I don't expect you to listen. You will have a smart scientific answer as always, and I can't match that. The reason I post is to help others. My conscience wouldn't be clear if I didn't tell you this. That's all. Goodbye then. :)

zand tell me more
There's not a lot more to say really. I followed the science of the day and ate a low fat low calorie diet and filled up with diet coke. It was easy at first. Then when I got to age 38 I had put on maybe 20 pounds and couldn't shift it, despite cutting calories even further and exercising more. I got ill frequently and piled on the pounds. It wasn't until I thought 'enough is enough' and I realised I wouldn't ever lose weight by cutting calories that I started to do something different. So I slowly discovered low carbing by cutting out the 'big carbs' around 8-9 years ago and realised by reading books on the subject that I was pre-diabetic. Sadly I didn't manage to turn things around before I became T2.

****, your case looks alot like me!
what do you advise me?
I have cut most of the carbs, but I find it hard to stick to <20g carbs per day
I am almost a week in low carbs with some minor signs of ketosis, but it seems like that diet coke is preventing it!
or am I paranoid?

Why not try cutting out diet coke and see if it makes a difference? Clearly you have the self-control, since you've managed a week on low carbs.

Or you could get a meter and test for it specifically. Although I think the low carb way is universally beneficial for diabetics, the way our bodies respond to specific foods does vary: for example, bread has always spiked my BG higher than straight glucose (as shown by several glucose tolerance tests), whereas many posters here can tolerate some bread without ill effect. That's why we keep banging on about "eating to your meter" :)

I don't go near any type of coke after watching a rusty chrome car bumper being cleaned up using it :-(

I am partial to a bottle of Sprite Zero (or Lite), particularly in the summer months.

As a side note, I would suggest that as you get into the swing of low carbing and gradually eliminating foods that aren't conducive to lowering BG, you will find that your taste modifies considerably. And quite quickly too. I actually noticed it within a few weeks of cutting out commercially sweetened things and dropping sugar from coffee and tea. Even my husband, who isn't diabetic and eats more carbs than me, has found his taste modified the same, alongside me.

I think the taste for foods and drinks like Coke is almost a addiction and it won't take long without them to not miss them. I had a full fat Coke a couple of weeks ago as treatment for a hypo as I had some in the fridge for Christmas guests and once it had done its job and I came to my senses, I was appalled at the taste, having not had one for a long while.

My current favourite drink is fizzy (carbonated) water with various flavourings added - I bought a bag of lemons cheaply and slice and squeeze a big chunk into the water. It's refreshing, practically no carbs, no nasty additives or chemicals and significantly cheaper than commercial 'pop'. I paid £1.67 for 8 litres and a bag of lemons.

I avoid water for the same reasons! You should see how rusty it can make a chrome car bumper!
