I am insulin dependent type 2 diabetic on holiday abroad at the moment.

Following surgery in February my blood sugars started to fluctuate and I am awaiting appointment with local diabetic clinic. My GP was happy for me to come on holiday.

I have had a few highs and lows since arriving here but last night I woke up feel worse than usual, (very, very dry mouth plus usual hypo symptoms) and my blood sugars had dropped to 0.8. After taking glucogel and bran flakes my sugar level rose to 10.2. Tested again after two hours (only had water to drink) and they have risen to 21.

I have tested my meter, which was OK, and have not altered my diet that much from what I eat at home.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

The example given may be just over treating the hypo. Or there could have been a liver dump tovtry and raise you. Without a carb count it's hard to tell.
Is this the only occasion that you have seen such variation?
0.8 must have been scary.

I agree with Diakat seems very low 0.8 scary and super low must have over treated in you rush to correct which is understandable this combined with liver dump may be the cause let us know what doctor says

Thank you both for responding. Sorry for delay in replying. I'm just finding my way around this site.
Spoke to local pharmacist who has asked me to call back later this evening when he has checked with someone else. (Bit of a language problem) . In the meantime I am being very careful of what I eat. My levels are slowly coming down.
I treated this hypo same as others in the past. Lowest I've been before is 3. I have overcompensated before, but never raised levels above 10. Bit of a puzzle?

Are you in a hot country? Heat can effect blood sugar control making both hypos and hypers more likely / pronounced and also how well insulin works.

Thank you for the link Boo1979. Temperature is around 25 degrees.
I have been using insulin for some years, I travel regularly and this is the first time I have had problems when abroad. I keep my spare insulin in fridge and am considering carrying pen currently in use in a frio bag.
Had quite a scare last night so being ultra careful now. Bit of a bore, but at least I am enjoying the culture if not the food.
