I have been lurking for a while and seen how supportive you are to first time questioners so decided this morning I would be brave and ask about something that is slightly concerning me. I was diagnosed T2 at the end of March, HBA1C was 121 and bg was 28. At the time I had no idea quite how high those were! I am 57 and at the time of diagnosis I weighed 16 st 10. Diabetic nurse at the GP surgery was very kind, non-judgemental, matter of fact. She gave me a monitor, told me not to get too hung up on it - she suggested testing every couple of days before I got up. Also suggested “cutting down on sugar” and put me on metformin 500 x 2. Started to investigate options myself, found this forum and overhauled my life. Reduced carb intake to moderate, usually about 50g a day, rarely up to 100g and every so often down to 30g - have not managed lower. Weight is now 14 st 8 lb, so loss of 2 stone over 3 months - not bad but still a long way to go before I am “overweight”. My fasting bg dropped to under 4 after a few weeks on metformin so (after a call with the nurse) I stopped the tablets so have been managing with diet and exercise since mid May. Had repeat blood test a couple of weeks ago and HBA1C has reduced to 44. So far so good. But my fasting levels have fluctuated constantly - most mornings they are in the low 5’s, but can go up to 6.5 for a day and then drop to 3.5 before coming back to the 5’s. I have seen comments about the danger of spikes so I wondered if these fluctuations are something I should be worried about? I don’t test after meals - just on waking.
