I made only a few changes to my Diet - Thought I would share these to help others who have been told by GP to lose weight because of Diabetes.
- Malted Bread and Rolls
- 'Baked' Crisps (not fried crisps)
- 2 Sausages instead of 4
- Carrot and Banana everyday
- Options Hot Chocolate, less sugar/fat
- Increased to 2 portions of vegetable at meal where applicable
- Go-ahead Biscuits instead of Tracker bar
- Walk between 1.2miles - 2.4miles per day x 5 days
- Changed to Weight Watchers Malted Bread
- Changed to 'Reduced Sugar' Jam and Marmalade
- Changed to Multigrain Cereals i.e. Multigrain Hoops and Multigrain Boulders

It was such a surprise when I went in Jan 2015 I had lost 8lb since August 2014 then on 02 March when I saw Nurse she said I had lost another 3lb since Jan 2015.

So all together I have lost 11lb this is the most I have ever lost, I'm sure these little changes have made a real difference.

Hi. Do you monitor your reactions to these foods using a blood glucose monitor? Well done on your weight loss.

Hi Avocado, Thank You for the positive comments. I only tend to test my blood glucose now if I either feel dizzy or have shakes. I'm on slow release Metformin and considered to be a 'stable diabetic'

If I were you, I would monitor routinely for a while. There are a lot of processed carbs on your list which a lot of diabetics cannot tolerate well. Good luck.

Being told a "stable" diabetic does not really mean anything. It could effectively mean that you could have a "stable higher hba1c" or a "stable lower hba1c".
Without testing and ensuring your levels are stabilised under 8.0 then you shouldn't be convinced that you are doing well.
I hope you have found a way to manage your health well.. But even your weight loss isn't really a huge amount over that period of time....

However, its personal happiness and contentment that means a lot to every individual.

I would recommend though that you find out what your hba1c and your cholesterol breakdowns are and also start testing before and after meals.
That is the only way to ensure that you are stable..

Well done on the weight loss :) Can you tell is what are your average BG levels? There are things that could still be changed on your list if you wanted to increase weight loss or lower BG, we'd be happy to suggest a few!
One change I made then found I preferred the new way was the hot choclate. Instead I make cocoa with water then add a big dollop of cream. There is no sugar at all in cocoa and the carbs are negligible, and you save even more sugar and carbs by not using milk. And it tastes gorgeous!

Hi Sooty2013, I want to be as concise as possible, I looked at your suggested foods, they may be great for your weight loss, but as a diabetic I would be very concerned with that list. I would take the advice offered by @rowan, @donnellysdogs & @Avocado Sevenfold. There is no such thing as a stable Diabetic, unless you know what your numbers have stabilized at, if that is possible. You really need to test.

Neil

Congratulations on your weight loss and that you have found the way that works for you as that is what we all aim for

Good result, well done. You hadn't weighed yourself between August 2014 and January 2015, that's amazing.

If you are taking prescribed medication for the diabetes then you will be better off weighing regularly, things like Gliclazide can help you gain weight and you need to be aware rather than wait several months and be shocked. I made that mistake and it wasn't a pound or two either.

The other monitoring that is essential is BG, the meters are pretty cheap, sometimes free, the test strips are another matter all together.

As has already been suggested cutting out a few more carbs will help with reducing weight, reducing BG and reducing cholesterol. The cholesterol is another one of those topics that is immense, GPs seem to hand out statins like smarties, whether they're a benefit or not depends on a lot of things.

We're all very different though, for example, I do not eat that many carbs, so :-
- Malted Bread and Rolls
- 'Baked' Crisps
- Sausages
- Banana
- Options Hot Chocolate
- Go-ahead Biscuits instead of Tracker bar
- Weight Watchers Malted Bread
- 'Reduced Sugar' Jam and Marmalade
- Multigrain Cereals i.e. Multigrain Hoops and Multigrain Boulders
just aren't on the menu in my house.

It might seem very austere, but for me it means that I don't have to take Gliclazide, Januvia or Atorvastatin. I have good BG control and I'm not worried about my cholesterol. I consume less than 1,000 calories a day but I'm not losing any weight and just in case anybody wants to say "plateau", that's like the GP telling me I had IBS when I knew it was Metformin that kept me in the bathroom for hours. There's more to it than that.

At the end of the day, it's what you're happy with and what's good for you, keep up the good work, but bare in mind that we're all so very different in the way that we control this disease.

Hi and welcome. Well done for the weight loss so far. Some of the things on your food list are not normally good for us due to the carb amount. In your list this includes malted bread, bananas, multi-rain cereals and so on. Although wholewheat grain is absorbed more smoothly than refined white flour it has the same carb level so needs to be kept under control. Make some more changes if you can and that will help avoid the need for too much medication.

I can't eat any of of them either (except for 97% sausages) they send my BG sky high!
