I have always said that the Chicken Kiev is not all it seems to be since it makes me spike something 'orrid. BBC News was pushing a new series starting on Channel 4 at 8.30pm this evening called Food Unwrapped. They say they will examine the Chicken Kiev in the first episode.

Let's see just how right/wrong I was.

The only thing that would cause a big rise in bg levels after eating a Chicken Kiev would be the flour and the breadcrumbs used on the chicken coating, how ever if you are talking about a processed/fast food Chicken Kiev bought from a supermarket it may have all sorts of stuff in it it probably isnt even made with a real chicken breast but re constituted chicken bits with a binder that could contain anything.

Chicken Kiev isnt that hard to make at home with real ingredients http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chickenkievs_86309 (Other recipes are available just search :D )

Chicken Kiev is probably not the same without the crispy flour and breadcrumb coating so if that is the culprit then perhaps rethink your menus. I often eat a chicken breast marinaded in Nandoes Piri Piri source and baked in the oven or a chilli and garlic marinade I buy from Tescos. Or perhaps make your own garlic butter and pour that over a chicken breast, not the same I know but if you cant eat flour and breadcrumbs you just have to think of other ways to dress up your chicken

If you buy and eat supermarket processed food you never know what in it, buy fresh/frozen and prepare yourself and you will know exactly what is in it and its usually nicer and cheaper too.

That's what I told my nurse about two years ago and she replied, "Nonsense, it's got chicken on the label".

I am looking forward to tonight's program. I may even record it for her.

Should be a good show. Supermarket Chicken Kiev can contain 15 - 20g of carbs per portion, as Sid says it's the coating that mainly gives it the carb value.

Thanks - I'm going to record these!

I saw the program and was both impressed and disappointed. The chicken factory was extremely clean and well run and made me feel that the producers of food were responsible people.

The disappointment came in the production of kievs in particular since I was hoping to find out what they mixed with the minced chicken and that point was glossed over to some extent. The question was asked as to how many kievs could be made with one chicken breast and the answer was five. I can't believe you can achieve that ratio without bulking out the meat with something else.

Interesting program though. I now know how they keep apples for long periods also.

I sort of expected the program to be an exposee but it has shown everything in a good light so far.

I think the answer was 6 Kiev's from one chicken breast Fergus, without doubt to achieve such numbers they use bulking agents. Those poor chickens mind, 500,00 a day is going some, just the same we don't complain when buying a whole fresh chicken for under £4.

The apple store was interesting; I agree with the taxi driver when he said his grandma would remove the mould from the bread and still eat it toasted :)
