NHS give completely wrong advice.
Many of us, when first diagnosed started with the medication that the doctor prescribed but,

before gong on meds` how many of you tried:

Following a low carb diet?

Using cinnamon?

Using apple cider vinegar on, or before your food?

Taking PGX before meals? Look it up.

Just 4 of the natural ways known to help combat type 2 diabetes? There are many more.....
talk to your doctor if on meds, before you decide to go the natural route.

Toncra, have you personally tried any of these remedys/methods? I have heard of all these latest fads/miracle wonder cures and I am skeptical however I would be willing to give them a try as at the moment I am not getting much advice as to what I should be eating etc. I just got handed a very basic diet sheet and left to get on with it which it is a bit daunting especially as recently I haven't been felling too great and got more help from the diabetic helpline then my GP etc. and my diabetic dietician, one says this and the other says something completely different, very confusing.

Dear notSoSweet2 i can't see if you're on medication or not I have been T2 for 10 years and 1year ago while in hospital doctors put me on 1 metformin and 1 sitagliptin. Diabetic team were fantastic and helped me put together meal plan. They suggested I follow a healthy diet me writing down foods I enjoy. Next we looked at types of meals I could make from this list and then wrote a menu for the first week. Then to buy the foods on the list once a week and it became so much easier each day to know exactly what to prepare and cook. Don't know if this will help you but if you put this idea along with other tips you've got then you will have got a bit further x

Also quantity is vitally important, suggested portions to aim for are 2 small potatoes? 4ounces or 100g meat/protein and vegetables for dinner and even managed to squeeze in a very small portion of pudding but best eaten immediately after your meal.

Yes quantity is vital. I was very surprised when I worked out how much food a 1000 calories looked like (1 bowl of porridge and 2 ham salad sandwichs) that was the biggest shock and then working out that I must of been eating about 5000 a day.

Hi bruciebonus I was born late 40's when rationing coming to an end. I believe my parents then filled our plates with potatoes and vegetables and a little meat. That size of portions became the norm and therefore for me it certainly shocked me just how much carbs I ate. This is probably true for many of my age group and worth considering this could be a problem for all of us.

Yep spud pie was literally that if you found a piece of meat you were the fortunate one! I remember my mum making broth with dumplings(oh for a dumpling) and making an extra dumpling each for pudding which we had with a sweetened white sauce

Hi Montana, I am 50 this year and my parents were in there early 40s when I was born so I had the same problem big dinners and you gotta eat it all, clean your plate, because of the starving children in the 3rd world, it's hard to break the habits. I always told my son leave what you don't want, and he can leave half a plate of food without a second thought.

Yes bruciebonus I know the feeling. My parents wouldn't let us leave the table until it was all eaten
I believe it was more brainwashing than habit after all we never really had a benchmark to know what proportions other families had so what ever we had was normal. Today there is loads of info about diets and it was only when I attended a diabetic course last year that I realised.

Thank you Montana, you obviously have a great diabetic team. I did get a lot more help and learning more as I go along from the diabetic help line and the diabetic forum which are both great and people like yourself so thank you. I am not currently on any medication however my blood sugar levels were quite high and my doctor is now reviewing when the bloods come back as to whether to put me on any medication and it is looking like its a possibility. Maybe we can swop ideas, recipes etc. that would be fab and so helpful to me x

Toncra I am all set, went out today and bought all the above apart from PGX so I will give it a try and keep you posted.

Sure anytime NotSoSweet2. May I say that GP's often do rush in with getting us on the meds at first sign of raised bs levels. However for me a few years ago I asked for her to hold back meds while I tried revising my diet and exercise routine. This worked well for a while until I lapsed back to bad habits. Hence I'm now on meds so if you think you might achieve this I'd give it a try. I don't so much use recipes just a healthy version of my favourite foods. I made a list of all the things I loved and adapted them to healthier meals. Little by little get a large diary or notepad and write down everything you enjoy and then the foods you will eat but don't like as much. I started with simple things easy and quick. Make a salad for 2/3 days and refrigerate. Them one day I'd have chicken salad and small jacket potato. Next day have sandwich of salad and cheese or meat for lunch or pasta salad and small poached salmon. Tho o don't know your circumstances but I live on my own so this plan suited me. Please get in touch any time if you need/want to x

You are so helpful, thank you so much, all very practical and simple ideas, I live on my own too so no problem there when it comes to planning and adapting a healthier eating routine. The exercise thing is a bit tricky at the moment as I had a stroke last year and still recovering mobility so the weight just crept up x

Hi again NSS2 ha know the feeling well i broke my back in an accident just over a year ago and still recovering with physio etc although Xmas was my biggest downfall this year as I went off the rails a bit with food especially mince pies lol well I'm only human. Good luck with the stroke and hope that you are getting through it ok x

I have cinnamon every day for breakfast, along with yogurt and berries, and am holding the meds at bay. Have been doing this for 4 years now and am at present classed as pre diabetic. Heard something on the radio the other day about a report that eating yogurt daily lowers you chance of becoming diabetic, anyone else catch this? Also lowered carb intake,(though def not classed as low carber as I consume around 75- 100 a day . Need something to keep me going as very active.
). Like my toast too much to go low carb,

I've never heard of benefits of yoghurt before but I did try the cinnamon once before and didn't succeed. I'm also not a low carber but do usually try to curb the carbs. I am open to suggestions tho so any info gratefully received.
