Hi. I’m in France for the weekend and stupidly forgot my metformin. I take 4 500s a day. Will I be ok for a weekend if I’m careful with what I eat or should I try and get some from a french chemist? Any help appreciated

I will suggest trying the pharmacy first see if someone at home can send you a previous script. If you can' t get it then just try with a good diet!
Best of luck

Don't panic if you can't get any for a weekend. You'll be fine.

Hi @Cfang. My understanding is metformin stays in the body for 48 hours - I did read that somewhere, but c.b.a. finding the link...

I just recently went away for a long weekend, and forgot my metfomin. I also was having so much fun I didn't test my blood glucose, although I had remembered my testing kit. When I came back and was testing and taking the tabs again I noticed very little difference in my readings.

My understanding of metformin is that it isn't one of those drugs which you need to take at the same time every day day in and day out else your guts and blood glucose system will have hell to pay. But of course - there is only one way to see what effect it does have on your blood glucose - and that is not to take it, so you could see this as an interesting experiment. Noting your physical response to not taking it for a weekend etc, and of course, your blood glucose readings on your return.

Remembering the 48 hours in the system thing also of course.

What you eat or more specifically how many carbohydrates you avoid eating makes a much bigger difference to your Blood Glucose than any amount of Metformin will.

I sometimes don’t take my Metformin for a couple of days if I’m feeling a bit bloated or off, also if I’m planning a rare boozy weekend with friends and I don’t notice any difference, you’ll be fine for a couple of days
