FreeStyle Libre Check Sensor message

I’ve been using the Freestyle Libre CGM for a bit over 2 years now and it normally works very well though I feel it under reads my actual blood glucose levels slightly most of the time. I’ve had a few sensors which were faulty and were replaced by FreeStyle Libre. However, yesterday I came to the end of the 14 day period of sensor use and applied a new sensor and started it up. After the 1 hour wait period I got the following message when I scanned the sensor. ‘Check Sensor. Please check your Sensor. If it is loose from your skin, please remove the Sensor and start a new one. If it is applied property, try starting Sensor again’

The sensor was not loose so I started it again. After 1 hour after I scanned the sensor I got the same error message. I repeated the process 3 times with the same result. This morning I removed the sensor and carefully applied a new one. After start up and the 1 hour wait when I scanned the new sensor I got the same Check Sensor error message! In the Event Log there is Er3,336 & Er3,302 during this period.

I will of course be contacting the FreeStyle Libre help line as I may have received a number of dodgy sensors. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems.

Hi @Hakkeirs ,

Welcome to the forum.

What device are you using, a phone?
Are you just scanning your sensor, or do you use a set up with a Bluetooth bridge? Like a Bubble or Miaomiao with an associated reader app?

Unfortunately my iPhone 6s can’t support the App so it’s just the reader supplied by FreeStyle. I’m on my second reader as there was a fault with the previous one.

Are you using Libre 1 or changed to the recently released Libre 2?
I'm thinking a possible algorithm issue with your app?

Hi Jaycee,

Still using Libre 1 which is NHS funded. I’ve not yet received any notification about receiving Libre 2 but I’ll check with the nurse who arranged for me to get Libre if it’s available.

On the second start attempt about 10 mins ago the sensor started working. However, it gave me a reading of 2.9. I can tell if I’m that low and when I checked my BS using a whole blood strip test it was 6.0. It may be a ‘bedding in’ issue as I usually apply the new sensor 24 Hrs before I activate it. I’ll be monitoring in closely.

Libre 2 costs not a penny more. There is absolutely no argument not to be changed over. Unless like me you are happy where you are at this moment in time.

I’ve had the same problem a couple of times I just phoned Abbott and they were replaced without any problem

I’ll be ringing them tomorrow at 8Am. Just replaced the second sensor and am having the same problem. The fault must be with the reader. Realise what a pain it is (literally) to have to do finger prick tests. It’s like being back in the dark ages.

Hi,

I recently got NHS funding for the Libre & got the L2 put on my script.
Now, back when I was self funding I could choose twix 1 & 2 & played about with various Bluetooth CGM set ups?

If you still have the box your libre came in?

This is a mad therory.. Check the box??
There isn't a lot of clear difference in the graphics on the packaging other than the "2" after Libre.? To the order picker's eye (though they should stick to the prescription.) they may pull the L2 of the shelf as a matter of course because that's what's replaced the MK1?

The "dark ages." Even finger pricking was Stat trek. I remember the days of mixing pee & water in a test tube & dropping a tab.. :D

I roo remember the chemistry set for the pee test , could only get a bs done in the hospital , I did eventually buy a bs meter it was the size of a house and took 2 mins for a result , I’ve got the libre 2 now not us3d it yet as I still have some liber 1 sensors left

Yes, it's worth checking you haven't got a Libre 2 by mistake as this needs the new reader. On a side issue I think it's madness the NHS not going with Libre 2. I self-fund so have the choice. Perhaps the NHS gets a better deal with Abbott for the Libre 1?

All I know is. I was self funding till the bathe end of March? of the year sourcing fro Asda. They were the same price then the prices were put up for both in February?
I did tell my endo that I personally found the L2 more stable & accurate in comparison to the first Libre.
He seemed satisfied I knew what I was doing & instructed my GP to prescribe the Libre 2.
I have ho idea what price the NHS procure them for.. & even the DVLA recognise them as a means of BG monitoring.
Though, it's still recomended one backs up lows with a meter..
I feel with some prescribed users using the L1, it's just a matter of amending the prescription?
I'm not entirely convinced most HCPs have their heads round the first sensor, let alone the tech with the second...

I don't use a reader. Just my phone.

My understanding is any delay in Libre 2 being added to prescriptions for those whose consultants/diabetes team have recommended it (assuming of course that one's GP has heard of flash or continuous glucose monitoring and the various options available) are still for the most part beng caused by clinical commissioning groups ("CCGs") , because it is GP surgeries that have to prescribe the Libre 2 as an ongoing prescription for their patients and CCGs control budgets and therefore dictate what GPs can and cannot prescribe.

Unfortunately too many CCGs continue to delay authorising GPs in CCG catchment areas prescribing the Libre 2, despite the fact that the NHS (CCGs/GP surgeries) pays exactly the same price to the manufacturer for the Libre 2 as the Libre 1.

There is an NHS consultant who is leading (in England) advocating for diabetes patients to have flash glucose monitors, and other appropriate technology to manage their diabetes. That consultant appears to be doing a sterling job "encouraging" CCGs to stop being so "penny wise and pound foolish" and (as NHS England mandated in November 2020) allow those patients (following a recommendation from their diabetes consultant/care team) that want to to switch from Libre 1 to Libre 2, but there is still much persuading/cajoling that needs to be done.

I saw a chart a few months ago which the NHS consultant published showing the percentage of patients who were on Libre 1 and therefore entitled to switch who have been moved onto the Libre 2 is still very small.

No doubt CCGs will claim they have been dealing with the Covid 19 vaccination rollout and that has delayed things. Perhaps that may play a part (although factually central government has bypassed CCGs completely in terms of implementing the vaccination rollout which is very a good thing).

I suspect CCGs will probably be equally as "penny wise and pound foolish" when the Libre 3 is authorised for use by NHS England and the manufacturer.
