Hello,

Does anyone that uses the freestyle libre get irritated skin when the libre is on? Mine has come off and it’s very red and itchy.

Hello,

Does anyone that uses the freestyle libre get irritated skin when the libre is on? Mine has come off and it’s very red and itchy.

Have a look at the thread below, one of the many devoted to this very subject.

Also be aware that for some people the skin reaction makes the libre results inaccurate, so do some spot checks against a glucometer before you put too much trust in it.

Contact dermatitis can be caused by the adhesive that holds the sensor on. Abbott have announced that it will be revised for April 2019. Some people acquire the irritation after months of trouble-free use. Some react after one or two sensors. It can be eased with various barriers, applying through blister patches, for example. Durable barrier creams help some people. But the adhesive can also be removed from the sensor with a pair of tweezers. Hold the cup it is in and tweak the adhesive patch sideways, peeling edges back towards the centre. Then clean off any remaining adhesive with lens cleaner spray and a cotton bud. Be careful not to dislodge the sensor in the process. It is best to mark its orientation in the holding cup so if it does come out you can replace it exactly in line. Get this wrong and the needle assembly won't line up when the sensor is applied. Put an Opsite patch on the arm, then some double sided sticky tape over that. Apply the sensor over the double sided tape and then fix the sensor with a couple of strips of Opsite but don't cover central hole. Obviously, this is an unofficial process but it works for me and you can find Youtube videos showing how it is done by others. Maybe April will see Abbott have the problem rectified but I expect some people will still react and may need to do something like this.
