Fried Bread Advice

Fried Bread......please don't shout at me, ok? I know I swored.

We are tonight having strangled eggs, pigs in blankets, shrooms, bacon etc. I took all of the sausages etc out of the freezer and then went out, came home and some toerag has eaten the bacon. So we're short of teatime ingredients.

Selflessly, I am willing to forgo meat, because I'm wondering if I can have fried bread - working on the premise that if I fry it in olive oil it might be harder for my body to break down the starchy carbs in the white bread because they'll be oil coated - will this work?

(or shall I just lie to myself and have it for a special treat?)

I would avoid it even as a special treat  Best thing to do is try it and test, ok you may have a meter blow out, but you'll know for next time. Eat the bacon pincher, that could be an idea.

Jo, I'm not the diabetic in our house - although I can still test in the interests of research. There, you see? I'm totally selfless.....

So before supper I was 4.4mmol.

I ate one rasher of bacon, some strangled egg made with a splash of cream and one fried slice fried in olive oil.

I'll test again in two hours (22.15) and see what it is then.

Julia

PS A fried slice is a once in a blue moon thing for me anyway, couldn't eat it very often at all.

I am so not speaking to you Julia. Anything bad was my staple rations not so long ago. Now I am in a big sulk!

Did your husband have a slice as well, and what were his readings if he doesn`t mind you saying?

Jeanne, MH had bread, but not fried and it was my home made seeded brown spelt bread. So because he knows he can eat that in thin slices, he hasn't tested.

I do have to be honest and admit that I don't feel very good after that slice. I feel lethargic and bloated. You have my permission to be smug  , but I was eating it in the interests of research..............even if my post supper levels are in my boots I shan't be in any hurry to eat fried bread again.

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
Fry the bread in olive oil.

Then throw away the bread and drink the olive oil ;-)

Just as delicious (and low in carbs) is a brand called The Black Farmer found in most Morrison's stores.

Were they the 97% ones? If so, they are a lot nicer than the gluten free.

So, after two hours my reading was 5.2mmols.

I'm not sure if that helps anyone - not being a diabetic I probably won't get spikes. I'm still bloated so I shall be keeping clear of bread - that was the first piece of bread of any kind that I've eaten in six weeks. That will definitely stop me craving bread now!

I got both to try them. One lot in the freezer one in the fridge.

Just to add; I was up all night with a bad tummy, reflux and lots of painful wind. Seems to be that, after 6 or 7 weeks of low carbing, I can't handle bread any more. Still feel very rough this morning.

Trouble is, not being a diabetic, if you had two pizzas, a burger bun and a bag of batter bits from the chippy you'd still probably be in the 5's after two hours! Doesn't help a lot sadly, other than make me jealous.
Excuse my extreme ignorance - did I miss something? Why are you testing? Just curiosity, or some other reason? Just being nosey! :D

Shame the story ended that way with divine retribution for your sin.
WHy not some exercise running to the shop for resupply?
What kind of bread probably matters.... of course we have to personally test at least twice to be absolutely sure this food is bad for us DMs.... the lord will reward thoroughness I am sure. And forgive us our temporary sin.
This afternoon I am considering eating a Mars bar deep friend to see if I can bust my meter.... not really but the principle is valid methinks. Testing is the only way, rigorously and more than once.
The psychology of DM is fascinating, it amplifies the usual feelings of guilt. Whether it should I dunno. Being cheerful and a little naughty is some say good for us... so justify it however you like and have no regrets....

If I ate that lot, I'd probably still have a reading in the 5's but from my hospital bed..... I tested because I thought it might help. There is also an element of 'diabetes can happen to me' now that there are three diabetics in my immediate family (admittedly I am only related to one of them) and I dread getting diabetes on it's own, but more so with my hypothyroidism, which is hard enough to cope with.

"WHy not some exercise running to the shop for resupply?"

I don't run anywhere with hypothyroidism, I have little enough energy as it is, certainly not enough to jog the seven miles to my nearest shop and back. I can justify eating fried bread as a non-diabetic...but I cannot justify eating it as part of my low carb diet. And, as I've now discovered, I cannot justify eating bread at all. Ironically, the diabetic in my life can tolerate two slices of home made seeded spelt bread per day without increasing his levels one bit. Do let us know how you get on with the deep fried Mars bar.....

Hi Julia... so sad to hear your fatigue prevents carrying out my suggestion and apologies for my flippancy.
While my sister fortunately does not suffer DM like me she has her own cross to bear having told me last month she has hypothyroidism. I had to look this up even though my cat has hyperthyroidism I think it is and he is on daily tablets, is always wanting something to eat otherwise. But like DM it seems that once you have it is a life sentence. Very unfair.
All the best.
PS I resisted the Mars bar and had spag bol made by son along with a small helping of vermicelli, this I have checked before and is acceptable, somehow these days, maybe because of the met, I have no appetite for ordinary spag which is probably just as well.
