Diabetes lol
Been diagnosed for a month now.

I've had to cut out so much fruit because of carbs and sugar.

I'm not allowing myself anymore than 30g sugar and 130 carbs a day.. im also a fussy eater.

But am I looking at it wrong? Should I eat as much fruit as I need to fill myself up?

Its all so confusing what I should and shouldn't eat as the web is so conflicting and my gp has been pretty terrible at educating.

A lot of Fruit is higher in carbs as you say which makes it hard for type 2s. I think I read some type 1s find it hard to dose properly for them too. There are lower carb fruits and berries that are not so bad like strawberries, blueberries, avocado etc. (cucumber and tomatoes and such aren’t too bad carb wise either)

why do you think I you should eat as much to fill? Carbs convert to glucose, counting that rather than sugars is Better. It’s why bread, pasta, rice has as much of an impact as eating fruit or even chocolate

if you are looking to lower carbs which is good to help blood levels then testing before eating and 2 hours later with an aim of < 2 rise, and counting total carbs in a day, with 130 being a low carb start is something many on here have found helps. Some do need to go even lower carb to get the changes they need though

To have normal numbers after eating I have under 40 gm of carbs a day, all from veges fresh and frozen most days - though of course some are botanically fruits. I think that there are only a few who need to go as low as that, especially if they exercise every day, but testing is really the way to check that blood glucose is under control and in the normal range.
I never fill myself up - long years eating a low calorie diet accustomed me to almost perpetual hunger, and small meals. Simply not being hungry is my usual aim.

If you're looking for a healthy fill, I'd say vegetables would be a better bet than fruit. You can eat as much broccoli and cabbage as you like, pretty much. Fruit tends to have a lot more carbohydrate.

To be honest, I've found dietary confusion can be simplified a lot in most cases by simply following the rule 'Avoid Carbs'. I'm not trying to be flippant here either: when I was first diagnosed, I only knew diabetes meant you couldn't handle carbs, so I just cut them out my life altogether. Didn't know how to test my bloods, didn't know much about nutrition, just avoided carbs like the plague. Never felt better. Then, as I learned more, I started working healthy carbs back in- a little bit of fruit, some carrots, the odd slice of bread. Now look at me- fat again. Complete disaster!

You could of course ask those questions here. Just a thought

Some questions: Are you working off the assumption that "fruit is healthy" and that the more you eat the healthier you are? What do you mean by "a fussy eater"? Are you testing BG before and after meals? Are you eating 160g carbs/day (30g + 130g) or 130g, of which 30g is pure sugar?

Type 2 diabetes effectively means an inability to process carbohydrates, so the more of those you eat, the more you will stress your system. Your choice. The current official NHS advice for T2s is indeed to base meals around starchy carbohydrates... which might be OK for some but is no good for me and I suspect for any T2. If you go back 50 or 60 years you will see that the standard diet recommended by medics for T2s was what we would recognize as a low carb diet - it's nothing new. I am not surprised that, if you are eating a fair amount of carbs, your body is still craving them and provoking hunger. My experience is that what "fills you up" is protein and fat.

I have mixed results with fruit..

Banana = bad
Apple/pear is ok

One I was told to avoid was grapes.. but when I have these and I’ve been know to eat the whole punnet- the have absolutely no effect on me

I’m lucky I have a cgm so can see the effect different foods have on me

For a typical T2 this will be more difficult unless you have a meter and test pre fruit and 2 hour afterwards to see how it affects you

Obviously fruit juices and smoothies will be much worse

Having said this some fruit forms part of a healthy diet.. so experimenting to see what you can or can’t have is a good idea
