Nurse visit today she discussed many things.....
Airline pilot or in the army is a no for a career! Piercings and tattoos should be fine! Pregnancy shouldn't be a problem....: drinking in moderation and driving will be ok! That sounds great...she is 11 years old!!!!! Is it me me?? Feel like I've ticked boxes tonight, still no carb counting, ratios or correction doses..: urrrgghhhhh

Nurse is wrong as there are now type 1 airline pilots :)
Joking apart though what the nurse was trying to do was reassure you that there is no reason on earth that your daughter can not lead a normal life :)
Have you asked about ratios carb counting etc? If not then do so and keep on at them even find the phone number of the dietician service at the hospital your daughter attends and ask how to make an apt so you can get started.

@CarbsRok yes have asked, asked and then asked a bit more... Next appt 18th Jan - the normal life will surely become more normal the quicker we have an understanding of just exactly we should be or not be doing?

Ok rant over...

Thanks for the support a muchly appreciated sounding board

I actually like the approach the nurse is using with you and your daughter, but to an extent, I understand how you feel not knowing what to do.

I hated the first two weeks after my diagnosis because all I got was a canister of test strips and a levemir pen. I had no idea what to expect but in retrospect that was a good thing.

Trying to learn too much at once can be overwhelming, and trying to fix things too fast can actually have negative consequences. If your daughter's blood sugar drops back to normal too quickly she could feel physically uncomfortable. Our bodies seem to exhibit hypo symptoms (shakes, loss of coordination, sweating, etc) when our blood sugar drops rapidly. In a normal person that would be below ~4mmol/l but if her blood sugar has been 10+ for a very long time, she might feel uncomfortable even at 7mmol/l

Keep asking questions and you're right to be concerned about the lack of information. Just know that it's not necessarily a bad thing at this point.

I have had Type 1 for 49 years diagnosed at 6. All the things the nurse said your daughter can do I have done, except tattoos I have 3 healthy handsome sons. No problems I have used DAFNE since diagnosis in 1967. Dose adjustment for Normal Eating.

I understand your frustration. I've never not counted carbs so I can't imagine how difficult it can be without knowing about that. I saw a dietician while I was in hospital after diagnosis and after being stabilised. She explained really well and gave me a booklet of the carb values of common foods. She also went through the kind of thing I liked to eat and helped me work out the carbs.

I didn't find it confusing being taught that early on. In fact. It kind of brought a logic to the situation and gave me back some mental control in that I then had an idea what I was doing.

I don't know if it's a money thing or if they really think it'll confuse the newly diagnosed, but I find it sad that it doesn't seem to happen that way much any more.

I guess the nurse was trying to reassure you, but I'd have been a bit impatient too if I'd heard all that. Keep politely pushing for the info you want. It'll get easier :)
