Hi @karen8967 . First up welcome to the forum. Perhaps if you could tell us what your blood sugar levels are like we may be able to offer more advice. Is your DSN aware of your struggles?

A cpeptide test can't confirm whether or not you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. All a cpeptide test tells you is whether or not you are producing your own insulin. A type 2 diabetic may be, but if their pancreas is so exhausted from overworking to deal with insulin resistance it may not be. A type 1 diabetic may not be, but it takes some time for a newly diagnosed type 1 to cease producing insulin altogether. The time when a type 1 retains insulin production is know as the honeymoon period and it can be increased a bit by the breather given when commencing insulin.

So your hypos could be explained by a misdiagnosis with type 2 or by the fact you are a honeymooning type 1. Have you had antibody testing to assist in determining your type of diabetes?

What is the story of your diagnosis that initially got you a type 1 diagnosis?

Is there any pattern to your hypos that might assis in determining whether you need to reduce basal or bolus? Sometimes honeymoon doesn't really have a pattern... Are you carb counting for your Aprida?

It's very unusual for a type 2 to have ketones on diagnosis. So your diagnosis story strongly suggests type 1.

While you wait for a place on a carb counting course, there is an NHS course you can do online - https://www.bertieonline.org.uk

my sugar levels are around 6/8 of a morning then anything between 6 / 11 throughout day till night 1 do find that 2 hrs after meals my bloods spike really high but 2 hrs after that they come down my hac1s wer 120 at first but have came down to 69 but i do know that is still too high i also find that if my bg go under 5 i feel absolutely awful x

That's a false hypo. Anything over 4 is fine and not hypo. But because your body has become accustomed to running at much higher levels (hba1c of 120 equates to an average blood sugar of 18.3, hba1c of 69 equates to an average blood sugar of 10.9) it panics and thinks that normal levels are something to worry about, so you feel awful at those normal levels. If you can slowly step down to normal blood sugar your body will get used to normal blood sugars again.

Sounds like Type 1 to me. Question @catapillar: do they ever measure actual insulin levels anymore? I remember they measured mine way back when when I ended up in the hospital with a hypoglycemic seizure soon after diagnosis. I mean that would tell the doc whether you were still making insulin (honeymoon) or not. I'm sure they can still be measured I'm just not sure if anyone does it. Also sounds like the OP feels crummy at 5 whereas I don't feel it until about 3.5 usually. That's probably because of being used to being so high before diagnosis. That will get better, as Catapillar said.

thankyou catapillar and thebignewt i have actually been 2.1 and never even realised i was having a hypo but my son said my eyes had glazed over it is mad an other times when very low ive had the shakes and everthing i know its its only been 4 months but it feels longer i know all will settle down eventually to some normality my outlook is usually upbeat just feeling sorry for myself tonight just knowing there is people on here who listen an reply on here makes me feel better sorry foe the rant much appreciated onwards an upwards xx

That's good progress @karen8967, diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint - so don't go beating yourself up so early on:)

This will probably be one of the best purchases you make regarding your diabetes management.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B06XCDTPP1/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr=

That book and this forum changed things for me massively. As a result, managing my condition is about as good as it can get right now. I've met some wonderful people along the way and learned so much.

Try not to be negative, you're doing something right because you've almost halved your HbA1c already:)

Hi @karen8967 and welcome. I thought I'd comment as I'm still fairly newly diagnosed and having a strong honeymoon period. I have low basal needs right now which has nudged me too low on one too many an occasion but seem to have found a level that works for bolus ratios throughout the day.

I had a bit of a 'screw it' moment the other month and didn't take my doses for most of a weekend (spoiler: don't do this!). I'd had a week of presumably some strong endogenous insulin production pushing me low each day and I was getting sick of the shaking hands and horrible feeling. Regretted it as soon as I had highs in the 10s and 20s that wouldn't come down on their own and lesson learned in my case.

I get it's frustrating at this point as numbers can be erratic. Sometimes it seems like 60% maths, 20% intuition and 20% luck when dosing right now but please stick at it as it seems you've made great progress so far. I hope you find Think Like A Pancreas useful, it answered a lot of questions for me and is a great reference.

i am still learning my ratios for bolus but feel confident enough to higher or lower units as needed i only take 10 units basal which seems fine at the moment as long as i dont have a snack b4 bed x
