Fungal infection effect or wound effect on BG?

Glad things are finally turning a corner Spiker, hope your progress continues :)

Hi Spiker, I'm sorry you have been having trouble.

I am in a similar position with a surgical wound on my foot that got infected and opened up. After 2 weeks of IV and 6 weeks of oral antibiotics I am trying to get a clean but open wound to heal.

I have found I still need up to 130-150% increase in basal just to keep my blood sugar stable trying to get a clean wound to heal. With your additional problems from a fungal infection your insulin has two blood glucose raising forces to battle against. I hope things improve for you soon.

Hi Spiker sorry to hear you have been so unwell, not good :(
For probiotics your best bet is to get the capsule form from a health food shop. Initial cost is expensive but over all cost a lot cheaper than yogurts you will also get a lot more healthy bacteria.
No idea where your so called team got the idea of no more than a 50% + basal from. But simple solution to that is set up another basal with the increased amounts needed, problem solved :) Daktarin is a very good antifungal cream to use. You need to ask a pharmacist or your GP about this but there is a tablet you can take for fungal infections so this might be a better option as well as getting your blood sugars down. Have you also checked that your insulin is OK?
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Spike

my OH is coeliac and every now and again gets inflamed skin on his hands probably caused by handling something in the garage.....but what works a treat in making it go is eating live yogurt..... I can definately recommend Fage as we were given a load of it as left overs from a large dinner banquet so that was how we found out about the pros of eating yogurt.... How are you today with the bg?

BG is fighting up and I keep fighting it down. Now at +80% TBR. When my BG goes high I have the feeling of systemic infection again - very hot, dehydrated, weak. Not the normal hyper feeling at all. When I get BG down to normal levels (sub 8 ) I'm ok. I'm going to see if I can make it to 48hrs without antibiotics and see where I stand.

So how are you doing, Spiker ?
What I was going to ask and say had already been said while I was away, so nothing more to add apart from my good wishes, and I hope you get is sorted out . You were doing so well too

Hi Spiker, sorry to hear you've been poorly. When I had 5 lots of antibiotics in a short space of time I took Udo's Choice probiotic which helped immensely. If your infection comes back/doesn't appear to have gone PM me as there is something else I used to clear mine up too, and I'm too lazy to go into details right now! I hope you are well on the road to recovery now!

Hi Spiker, so sorry to hear of your troubles and sorry too I can´t help really except for saying go back on LCHF and advice you to go off grain for the time being. This might help with getting the thrush under control or so I have heard anyway.

Get well soon!

Just wanted to check in to say it is healing up slowly. I have programmed a permanent basal pattern on my pump that's about 75% above normal and that seems to be keeping my BG stable without the antibiotics. It's a long haul but I'm getting there. Back to the wound clinic tomorrow so hopefully it will be good news.

Just to add my best wishes too. Hope you get this sorted out soon and you get back to 'normal'.

Fingers crossed for you Spiker, best wishes.

All the best, Spiker. Sorry to hear you've had a bad time, and I hope you'll soon be on the mend. Take care!

Cheers everybody. I will update tomorrow after the clinic. However I have taken a sneaky look at the wounds and they look on the mend, to my untrained eye.

I occasionally get sweat rash (candida same bacteria as thrush) under my arms during the summer months. I find when I have this it tends to push my BG up higher than they otherwise would be,

Interesting. I get something that might be called a sweat rash, a red rash that starts in the sweaty areas in the summer and is itchy. It has come back after this infection. Maybe due to antibiotics killing off the bacteria that normally compete with the candida?

Yes that sounds exactly like sweat rash

When it flares up Canesten Hydrocortisone is a good bet as it reduces inflammation and treats the fungus.

You can also get cream which just contains the anti fungal for use when you know you have had a sweaty day so to speak. (cream is same as ones used for athletes foot)

But yes that sounds very much like sweat rash.

I just now used a generic clotrimazole (Canesten) cream and that seems to have helped. Thanks for that! I've had it for years and no doctor was ever able to diagnose it. Amazing.
